Dutch rivalries carry the character of their cities directly onto the pitch. The country is small and travel is easy, which keeps opposing supporters close and the concentration high.
De Klassieker (Ajax v Feyenoord)
The Netherlands’ biggest fixture, and the argument is about how Amsterdam and Rotterdam see themselves.
Amsterdam is canals and commerce, culture and tourism. Ajax built its identity on the lineage of Total Football, on winning beautifully, and on one of the most respected youth academies in the world. The self-image is sophistication, technique, intelligence.
Rotterdam is an industrial city with one of Europe’s largest ports. Its centre was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War and rebuilt as a modern city afterwards. Feyenoord’s support is organised around work, sweat and hardness, carrying a pride rooted in having rebuilt the place by hand. Rotterdam’s motto — Geen woorden maar daden, “no words but deeds” — comes from exactly that.
So the fixture stages a national division: intellect against labour, tourist city against working port. In recent years away supporters have at times been barred on safety grounds, which tells you something about the intensity.
The Rotterdam derbies (Feyenoord / Sparta / Excelsior)
In 2026-27, all three Rotterdam clubs are in the Eredivisie — an unusual situation that puts several city derbies on the calendar.
- Sparta Rotterdam — founded in 1888, among the oldest professional clubs in the Netherlands. Their ground, Het Kasteel (“the castle”), has a castle-like façade and is regularly named the most atmospheric stadium in the country
- Excelsior — the smallest of the three, playing at Woudestein, which holds only a few thousand. A top-flight ground that small is genuinely rare, and the closeness of the crowd to the pitch comes through even on television
Against Feyenoord’s scale, Sparta offers history and Excelsior offers neighbourhood. Three different kinds of pride inside one city is what makes Rotterdam interesting.
The Hague (ADO Den Haag)
ADO Den Haag is also back in the top flight for 2026-27. The Hague is the seat of government and the royal court, but ADO’s supporter culture is known for something rougher, rooted in the city’s working-class districts. Fixtures against Ajax and Feyenoord have historically been among the tensest in the country, and the league runs hotter in seasons when ADO is in it.
Eindhoven (PSV)
PSV was founded in 1913 as a club for employees of the electronics manufacturer Philips. A company-town origin is distinctive in the Netherlands and creates a third axis alongside Ajax (big city) and Feyenoord (dockside labour). PSV against Ajax tends to function less as a grudge and more as the fixture that decides the title.
This season’s promoted clubs
ADO Den Haag, Cambuur and Willem II came up for 2026-27. Cambuur is from Friesland, which means the Frisian derby against Heerenveen is back on the calendar. Friesland has its own language, and a fixture between the province’s two clubs carries the pride of what can feel like a separate country inside the Netherlands.

The Eredivisie is a league that plays its young players. Teenagers in a derby line-up are not unusual, and that is the single biggest difference from the bigger European leagues.
