Founded in Amsterdam in 1900, Ajax hold the record for the most Eredivisie titles with 36 championships. The Total Football philosophy pioneered by Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels in the 1970s revolutionised the way the game was played worldwide.

Four-time Champions League winners, Ajax produced a golden generation in 1995 under Louis van Gaal — with Kluivert, Seedorf, and Davids lifting the trophy. More recently, the De Toekomst academy has continued to develop world-class talent like Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt.

Johnny Heitinga, appointed in summer 2025, is a club legend who played 154 league matches for Ajax and previously served as interim manager in 2023, guiding the team to third place. He joined from Liverpool where he was assistant to Arne Slot.

Building on the 4-2-3-1 framework established by predecessor Francesco Farioli, Heitinga favours aggressive high pressing combined with wide overloads. The Cruyffian DNA of attacking, possession-based football remains the club's immovable philosophy regardless of who sits in the dugout.

Opened in 1996 as Europe's first stadium with a retractable roof, the Johan Cruyff Arena seats 55,865 — the largest capacity in the Netherlands. Construction cost approximately €140 million.

The venue hosted the 1998 Champions League Final, multiple Euro 2000 matches, and the 2013 Europa League Final. It was renamed in 2018 in honour of Johan Cruyff, the club's greatest icon.

De Toekomst ("The Future") is one of the world's most celebrated youth academies. From Cruyff to Bergkamp, Sneijder to Frenkie de Jong, the conveyor belt of talent has been producing stars for over half a century.

The academy's cornerstone is the 1-4-3-3 formation, taught from U-8 level upward. Every age group plays the same attacking, possession-based style as the first team — a consistency that forms Ajax's greatest competitive advantage.
