Match Preview
- Groningen open the Eredivisie season in a 4-2-3-1 against Utrecht's 3-4-2-1. Utrecht push Vesterlund and Zagre forward as wing-backs outside a back three, while Groningen answer with orthodox full-backs in Prins and Rente. The numbers do not match on the flanks, so who fills those gaps is the first thing to watch.
- Groningen's starting eleven is built on their own academy. Tymen Blokzijl, a 190cm centre-back of 21, came up through the ranks and has represented the Netherlands at youth level; left-back Wouter Prins is 22; and the second line of Tom van Bergen (22) and David van der Werff (21), plus Jorg Schreuders (21) on the right, all came from the same place.
- Prins brings an unusual weapon. The left-footed 22-year-old has a long throw that reaches the penalty area directly from the touchline — effectively an extra set piece every time Groningen win the ball near the corner. Even with 194cm Mike Eerdhuijzen in it, Utrecht's back three has more to deal with because of it.
- Utrecht lead the line with 194cm David Min. The 27-year-old scored 10 goals in a relegation fight to keep RKC Waalwijk up, including a hat-trick against Heracles, and his game is built on aerial presence and holding the ball up. Groningen meet him with 190cm Blokzijl and 187cm Marco Rente across the back line.
- The goalkeeping duel features two men who built their careers at the Dutch middle class. Groningen's Etienne Vaessen, 31 and 189cm, made 196 appearances over nine years at RKC Waalwijk and helped them win promotion. Utrecht's Michael Brouwer, 33, spent years at Heracles Almelo. There is a small subplot too: Vaessen and Utrecht's Min are both RKC alumni.
- Utrecht's two attacking midfielders are a study in contrast. Yoann Cathline, 24, was schooled at Guingamp and arrived via Lorient with France U20 experience, a left-footer who threatens cutting inside and running at defenders. Angel Alarcon is a 22-year-old Spaniard who came through Barcelona B and spent time at Porto. How the pair move around Min will define the shape of the attack.
- The midfield shows the age gap clearly. Groningen's base is 20-year-old Tygo Land, on loan from PSV, alongside 23-year-old Tica de Jonge, who spent time in Feyenoord's youth setup. Utrecht build around 32-year-old Joris van Overeem, who has already made 116 appearances across four seasons at this club.
- Groningen's centre-forward is Iceland international Bjornolfur Willumsson. The 25-year-old, 185cm, arrived via Breidablik and Norwegian side Kristiansund and plays with his back to goal. On the right, Marco Rente is a 29-year-old German who came through Borussia Dortmund II and made 87 appearances for Heracles, winning the Eerste Divisie along the way.
