Match Preview
- The Eredivisie season opens with a Rotterdam derby, and both Sparta and Feyenoord line up in a 4-2-3-1 for their first competitive fixture of the campaign. With the double pivot and the No.10 mirroring each other, the game is likely to be decided by who wins the second balls and who finds the first vertical pass that breaks the symmetry.
- There is a Japan-vs-Japan storyline in the front line: Sparta's No.10 Shunsuke Mito against Feyenoord's No.9 Ayase Ueda. Mito, 23 and only 164cm, moved to Europe from Albirex Niigata and is a right-footed left winger who cuts inside to shoot; he racked up seven goals and four assists in his last nine games of 2025-26. Ueda, 27, scored 22 goals for Cercle Brugge to finish second in the Belgian scoring charts and arrived at Feyenoord for a club-record fee, living off his box movement and runs in behind.
- Sparta start two former Feyenoord men. Toornstra, the attacking midfielder wearing No.8, won the Eredivisie title and two KNVB Cups during his years at the club he faces tonight, with spells at FC Utrecht and ADO Den Haag in between. Alongside him is Bruno Martins Indi, the 34-year-old left-footed centre-back and former Netherlands international whose career took him from Feyenoord to FC Porto and Stoke City. There is more ex-Feyenoord experience on the bench in defender Boyd Reith.
- The connection runs the other way in Feyenoord's midfield, where Jivai Zechiel starts as a Sparta Rotterdam academy graduate. The 22-year-old, just 171cm, came through both Sparta's and Feyenoord's youth systems and has represented the Netherlands at U21 level. His agility and ability to hold the ball under pressure make him the side's connector, and how calmly he shows for possession in the stadium where he grew up is worth watching.
- Feyenoord's attacking band of three is a showcase of recent recruitment. On the right, Anis Hadj Moussa is a left-footed Algeria international, 24, who signed a five-year deal after breaking through on loan at Vitesse. On the left, Gaoussou Diarra is a Mali international who hit 15 goals in 34 games for Istanbulspor in Turkey before a move worth around 3.5 million euros. In the middle, No.10 Luciano Valente, 27, came from FC Groningen for roughly 7 million euros and has been called up by the Netherlands.
- Sparta's forward line is just as cosmopolitan. Right-sided No.7 Terho is a 20-year-old Finland international, a left-footed inverted winger who arrived on loan having come through HJK Helsinki and Union SG. Leading the line is Thorsteinsson, a 188cm Iceland international whose natural position is left wing and who has played for St. Louis City in MLS and Beerschot in Belgium. Facing that pace is Feyenoord right-back Read, a 20-year-old already named the club's third captain.
- The goalkeeping duel is a study in contrasts. Sparta's Bednarek is a 33-year-old Pole standing 188cm, with 108 appearances and 42 clean sheets at Lech Poznan behind him, and he is the older brother of Porto defender Jan Bednarek. Feyenoord counter with 193cm German Ernst, 23, signed from Hertha BSC. Both are commanding in the air, so decision-making on crosses and set pieces could settle a tight derby.
- Feyenoord keep serious firepower in reserve. Sem Steijn, the 2024-25 Eredivisie top scorer and Player of the Year, joined from FC Twente for a club-record fee and is an attacking midfielder with an outstanding nose for goal. Portuguese right winger Goncalo Borges, a roughly 9 million euro signing from FC Porto, and Shaqueel van Persie, son of Robin van Persie, are also available, giving the visitors plenty of ways to change the game after the hour.
- Sparta's bench offers different solutions. Joel Ideho, a 23-year-old right winger schooled in Arsenal's academy, is a direct dribbler who has also turned out for FC Volendam and ADO Den Haag. Sonnevelt, a 188cm centre-forward signed from Telstar, is a natural target man, while 190cm Norwegian midfielder Roalsoy arrived from Molde with physicality and aerial presence, so the hosts can go long and direct late on if the derby stays level.
