Match Preview
- Newly promoted Telstar opened their first Eredivisie season in 47 years with a 2-1 win away at NEC Nijmegen and sit sixth on three points with a +1 goal difference. Sparta Rotterdam went the other way, losing 1-0 at home to Feyenoord to sit 13th without a point. With Excelsior leading on three points and a +4 goal difference, and eight sides level on three, this is Telstar's first home fixture of the campaign.
- Telstar centre-forward Jelani Seedorf lines up against the club that raised him. The 22-year-old right-footed striker came through Jong Sparta into the Sparta first team before a spell at Excelsior, and is the nephew of former Netherlands international Clarence Seedorf. A forward who contributes both goals and assists, he leads the line against defenders who know his game well.
- The reunion theme runs both ways. Sparta's No. 9 N. Þórisson, a 27-year-old Iceland international winger standing 188cm, spent time at Telstar after breaking through with KA Akureyri and moving on to Beerschot and St. Louis City. Another ex-Telstar man, 188cm target man M. Zonneveld, waits on the visiting bench as a centre-forward option built for aerial duels.
- Shunsuke Mito occupies the No. 10 role at the heart of Sparta's attacking trio. The 23-year-old Japanese forward joined from Albirex Niigata and, at 164cm, leans on explosive pace and sharp dribbling; as a right-footed left winger, cutting inside to shoot is his primary weapon. His interceptions and pressing from the front rarely dip over 90 minutes, making him Sparta's likeliest route back to points after the opening defeat.
- Two 188cm goalkeepers face off. Telstar's Ronald Koeman Jr, born in Barcelona and son of the Netherlands head coach, arrived in 2021, helped end the club's 47-year wait for top-flight football and was named their player of the year. Sparta reply with 33-year-old Pole F. Bednarek, older brother of Jan, who posted 42 clean sheets in 108 appearances for Lech Poznan before spells at Utrecht and Twente.
- Sparta's double pivot should decide who controls the tempo. J. Toornstra, an attacking midfielder who won an Eredivisie title and two KNVB Cups across eight seasons at Feyenoord, sits alongside 25-year-old J. Baas, a Dordrecht youth product who matured at Excelsior. Telstar counter through 25-year-old central midfielder P. Brouwer, whose balance of ball-winning and distribution drives their transitions.
- Telstar's width comes from 25-year-old right winger S. Hetli, a threat in one-v-one situations, and Portugal-born Rui Mendes. The 26-year-old scored 10 in 59 games for Hoffenheim II and then 15 in the Eerste Divisie with Emmen to help win promotion. They will attack a youthful Sparta centre-back pairing of 21-year-old N. Verschuren, out of Volendam's academy, and 20-year-old academy graduate M. Young.
- Experience anchors the Telstar back line. Marvin Peersman, a 185cm Belgian who signed on a free in the summer of 2026 at the age of 35, has played for Groningen and Cambuur at home and Hapoel Tel Aviv, PAS Giannina and Aris Thessaloniki abroad. Left-back J. Hardeveld, 31 and left-footed, brings Utrecht and Heracles mileage plus the set-piece delivery that mattered in the promotion play-offs.
- The benches offer contrasting late options. Telstar can turn to 21-year-old Turkey U19 winger Emirhan Demircan, schooled at Bayern Munich's academy, and 22-year-old Prince Aning, formerly of Borussia Dortmund. Sparta hold back 34-year-old former Netherlands centre-back B. Martins Indi, whose CV includes Feyenoord, Porto and Stoke City, alongside 190cm Norwegian midfielder A. Roaldsoy, signed from Molde.
