Match Preview
- Cambuur are back in the Eredivisie after three seasons away and the start has been brutal: 17th, no points from two games, one goal scored and seven conceded for a minus-six difference. Feyenoord sit seventh on four points from a win and a draw, chasing leaders AZ Alkmaar, who have nine from three. A young, rebuilt promoted side hosting one of the title contenders is the story here.
- The opening fortnight could hardly have been more different. Cambuur were beaten 4-0 at home by Excelsior on matchday one and lost 3-1 at Fortuna Sittard a week later. Feyenoord edged the Rotterdam derby 1-0 away at Sparta before being pegged back to a 2-2 draw at home by Go Ahead Eagles, keeping their goals-against column down to two.
- Japan international Ayase Ueda leads the line for the visitors. The 27-year-old centre-forward scored 22 goals at Cercle Brugge to finish second in the Belgian scoring charts and joined Feyenoord for a club-record fee, and his movement inside the box and runs in behind are his calling cards. Cambuur answer with a centre-back pairing of contrasting experience: captain Jamal Amofa, at 27 the oldest man in the squad at 185cm, and 19-year-old Ismael Baouf.
- Behind him stands another Japan international. Tsuyoshi Watanabe, 29, made 100 competitive appearances for Gent and served as game captain there, and he combines hang time in the air with sharp interceptions and blocks inside his own box. His partner is Jeremiah St. Juste, 25, an academy graduate who returned in January 2026 after spells at Mainz and Sporting CP and who carries the ball out of defence.
- Cambuur's goalkeeper faces his former club. Thijs Jansen, 24 and 192cm tall, came through Feyenoord's academy before earning his way back via De Graafschap and FC Oss, and he is now the promoted side's first choice. After seven goals conceded in two matches, he is likely to be the busiest man on the pitch against the club that raised him.
- Feyenoord's wide players carry serious threat. On the left, Mali international Gaoussou Diarra, 23, arrived for around 3.5 million euros after 15 goals in 34 games for Istanbulspor in Turkey, cutting inside off his stronger right foot. On the right, Algeria international Anis Hadj-Moussa, 24, is left-footed and made his name on loan at Vitesse. Cambuur's flanks are held by 19-year-old Lucas Jetten, an Ajax academy product who stands just 166cm, and 20-year-old Wiebe Kooistra.
- The midfield gap may be decisive. Feyenoord field Netherlands international Luciano Valente, 27, who arrived from Groningen for about seven million euros and wears the No.10, alongside Belgium international Charles Vanhoutte, a holding midfielder with 106 appearances for Union Saint-Gilloise and a set-piece specialist, and Netherlands U21 midfielder Gjivai Zechiel, 22. Cambuur's most experienced central option is 26-year-old Nicky Souren, schooled at MVV and Roda.
- The benches tell the same story. Feyenoord can introduce Sem Steijn, 24, the Eredivisie's top scorer and player of the year in 2024-25 who joined from Twente for a club-record fee, plus Casper Tengstedt, the Dane who once hit 15 goals in 14 games for Rosenborg, and Shaqueel van Persie, son of Robin. Cambuur's alternatives are 193cm Austrian forward Nicolas Binder and 20-year-old Norwegian Fabian Kvam, a clear step down in pedigree.
