Match Preview
- The table sets the tone: Sparta sit 11th on three points with a plus-one goal difference, while Utrecht are 14th and still pointless after two matches with a minus-four difference. Utrecht lost 2-1 at Groningen on the opening weekend and were then taken apart 4-1 at home by leaders AZ Alkmaar, who already have nine points. Sparta went down 0-1 to Feyenoord at home before winning 3-1 away at Telstar.
- This is a mirror match: both sides line up in a 3-4-3, and both trust natural full-backs with the wide slots of the midfield four. Sparta use 31-year-old right-back L. Martes, whose game is built on solid one-on-one defending and overlapping runs, while Utrecht field French left-back Arthur Zagré and Danish right-back Niklas Vesterlund, who started all 30 league games and scored five times at Tromsø. Whoever exploits the half-spaces between the back threes first should control the rhythm.
- Sparta's number 10 is Japan's Shunsuke Mito, 23, a right-footed left winger who moved to Europe from Albirex Niigata. At 164cm he relies on explosive acceleration and sharp dribbling, with the cut-inside shot as his signature weapon. He produced seven goals and four assists in his previous nine appearances in 2025-26, and his pressing-back and interception work means his output does not drop over 90 minutes.
- Two Sparta men face a former employer. Goalkeeper Filip Bednarek, 33, the elder brother of Jan Bednarek, kept goal for Utrecht as well as Heerenveen and Twente, and racked up 108 appearances with 42 clean sheets at Lech Poznań. On the bench sits attacking midfielder Jens Toornstra, who had two separate spells at Utrecht and won an Eredivisie title plus two KNVB Cups with Feyenoord.
- Sparta's back three is anchored by former Netherlands international Martins Indi, a 34-year-old left-footed centre-back with Feyenoord, Porto and Stoke City on his CV. His duel strength and leadership have to carry two very young partners: 20-year-old academy graduate Marvin Young and 21-year-old Nick Verschuren, a former Volendam youth player known for his reading of the game and distribution.
- Utrecht's spine is built on height. Greece international Vasilis Barkas, a 196cm left-footed goalkeeper with Celtic and AEK Athens behind him, is protected by 198cm, 91kg Belgian centre-back Matisse Didden, a Genk academy product who came via Roda JC and dominates aerially. With Mito at 164cm and 166cm academy midfielder Ayoni Santos in the front line, Sparta will want to play through the ground rather than into the box.
- Utrecht's creative hub is Dani de Wit, 28, an Ajax youth product who broke through at AZ Alkmaar and later played Bundesliga football with VfL Bochum. His strength is arriving late in the box and finishing. Alongside him are Ukrainian striker Artem Stepanov, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen after coming through the Shakhtar Donetsk academy, and 22-year-old Spaniard Ángel Alarcón, who has passed through Barcelona B and FC Porto.
- One of Sparta's front three is Iceland international Nökkvi Þórisson, a 188cm winger with an unusual route to the Eredivisie: Hannover 96's academy, a breakthrough at KA Akureyri, then spells at Beerschot in Belgium and St. Louis City in MLS. His combination of height and pace next to the small, technical Mito and Santos gives Utrecht's back three two completely different problems to solve.
- The benches could decide the closing stages. Utrecht can call on Iraq international Zidane Iqbal, a Manchester United academy graduate who became the club's first British South Asian player to appear in the Champions League, and 194cm striker David Min, who scored 10 goals to keep RKC Waalwijk in the division. Sparta hold back Arsenal-schooled right winger Joel Ideho and 20-year-old Finland international Casper Terho, previously with Union SG and HJK Helsinki.
