Match Preview
- Cambuur are the only side in the Eredivisie still waiting for a point: three matches, three defeats, three goals scored and 12 conceded for a goal difference of -9 that leaves them 18th. Twente sit 12th on three points, but they have played only two games — the lightest workload in the division — while leaders AZ Alkmaar have already banked 12 points from four.
- Every Cambuur fixture so far has ended in multiple goals conceded: 0-4 at home to Excelsior on the opening weekend, 1-3 away at Fortuna Sittard, then 2-5 at home to Feyenoord. Two of their three league goals arrived in that Feyenoord match, so the challenge is to keep that flicker of attacking life going while plugging the leaks at the back.
- Twente's season reads lost one, won one. They were beaten 1-0 away at Heerenveen on matchday one before a 3-1 home win over PEC Zwolle, three goals scored and two conceded across the two games. The clubs have not met yet this season, so there is no head-to-head form to lean on.
- The shape battle frames everything: Cambuur's 5-3-2 against Twente's 4-2-3-1. The hosts pack the middle with a back five and look to spring 18-year-old Sami Bouhoudane and 19-year-old Iwan Henstra on the counter, while Twente line up Marko Pjaca, Younes Taha and Sondre Ørjasæter behind Wout Weghorst and will hunt the pockets either side of that back five.
- Weghorst is the obvious mismatch. The 34-year-old Netherlands centre-forward stands 197cm, scored 70 goals in 144 appearances for Wolfsburg and has Manchester United, Burnley and Beşiktaş on his CV as a target man. Cambuur's back five includes the 166cm Lucas Jetten and 170cm Morgan Costarelli, which leaves 190cm left-footed centre-back Billy van Duijl, a Volendam academy product, to shoulder most of the aerial duels.
- The midfield pedigree tilts towards the visitors. Twente pair 23-year-old Daouda Weidmann — Paris Saint-Germain academy, then Torino and RKC Waalwijk — with Algeria international Ramiz Zerrouki, who made 108 appearances for the club before his 2023 move to Feyenoord. Cambuur answer with 26-year-old Nicky Souren, schooled at MVV and Roda, 21-year-old No.10 Rafik El Arguioui and AZ academy graduate Jorn Berkhout.
- Cambuur's youth is written all over the team sheet. Captain and centre-back Jamal Amofa is the oldest man in the squad at 27, flanked by 19-year-old Ajax academy product Jetten, 19-year-old Ismaël Baouf of Anderlecht II and Charleroi, and 21-year-old Costarelli, who learned his defending at Lille. Amofa's Eredivisie mileage with ADO Den Haag and Go Ahead Eagles makes him the reference point for a side back in the top flight after three seasons away.
- Both goalkeepers measure 192cm. Twente's Joël Drommel is back where he made his name, having played more than 100 games for the club before winning back-to-back Eredivisie titles and the KNVB Cup at PSV and spending a loan spell at Sparta Rotterdam. Cambuur's Thijs Jansen, a Feyenoord youth product who passed through De Graafschap and FC Oss, is the 24-year-old first choice. Twente's bench holds 198cm Lars Unnerstall and 42-year-old Remko Pasveer.
- The flanks should decide plenty. Marko Pjaca, a Croatia international from the 2018 World Cup final squad with Juventus, Schalke, Fiorentina and Torino behind him, is a right-footed winger who cuts inside from the left and will be met by the 170cm Costarelli. On the other side, 23-year-old left-footed right winger Younes Taha helped Morocco win the 2023 CAF U-23 Cup of Nations and once posted 14 goals in 31 starts in the Dutch second tier with PEC Zwolle.
- Twente's back line mixes teenager and veteran. Ruud Nijstad, an academy centre-back born in 2008 and standing 188cm, lines up alongside 32-year-old Robin Pröpper, the 190cm former Twente captain who returned in 2025 after a spell with Rangers in Scotland. The full-back slots go to 174cm Bart van Rooij, developed at NEC Nijmegen, and left-footed Dane Aske Adelgaard, an Odense graduate.
