Match Preview
- A bottom-half six-pointer as early as matchday five: Sparta Rotterdam sit 12th on four points (1W-1D-2L, goal difference 0), one clear of 13th-placed PEC Zwolle on three (1W-3L, minus four). While AZ Alkmaar have already opened up a gap at the top with 12 points from four games, the loser here will find themselves drifting toward Willem II and ADO Den Haag, both stuck on a single point.
- Sparta's season reads L-W-D-L. They lost 1-0 at home to Feyenoord on the opening day, won 3-1 at Telstar in round two, drew a wild 3-3 with Utrecht at home in round three, then went down 2-1 at Excelsior. Seven scored and seven conceded in four matches tells the story: the defence leaks, but this is a side that can turn a game into a shootout.
- PEC Zwolle arrive on L-L-W-L. They were beaten 2-0 at home by Ajax, lost 3-1 at Twente, then produced their one bright moment with a 2-0 win away at Heerenveen before collapsing 3-1 at home to NEC Nijmegen. Four goals scored and eight conceded is the profile of a side struggling at both ends, and a second away return of the season is close to essential here.
- Shunsuke Mito wears the number 10 and starts in Sparta's attacking three. The 23-year-old joined from Albirex Niigata and, at just 164cm, relies on explosive acceleration and a right foot that lets him cut inside from the left to shoot. He returned seven goals and four assists in his last nine outings in 2025-26, and his pressing and interceptions make him a launching point in transition as well.
- Two reunions on the Zwolle side. Right-back S. Florauns, 28 and a Curacao international, came through the Sparta academy and made his professional debut there before racking up 82 appearances at Heerenveen and a spell in Turkey with Antalyaspor. Alongside him is Nick Viergever, 37, a three-cap Netherlands centre-back with Ajax and PSV on his CV who also played for Sparta.
- Both sides line up 4-2-3-1, so the double-pivot battle should decide who controls the tempo. Sparta's J. Baas, 25, developed at Excelsior after coming through the Dordrecht youth ranks and handles distribution and transitions. Zwolle counter with New Zealand international Ryan Thomas, 31, who first joined the club in 2013 and helped them win the 2015 Dutch Super Cup before a PSV spell, partnered by 186cm Dane Tobias Sorensen, 24, schooled at Vejle and Kolding.
- The centre-forward duel is a study in contrasts of pedigree rather than profile. Sparta's 188cm M. Sonneveldt, 27, arrived from Telstar and offers a genuine target man who holds the ball up. Zwolle's 186cm K. Coestons, 26, scored 32 goals in 157 games for MVV Maastricht and 11 in 16 for Sweden's Dalkurd before a spell in the 2. Bundesliga with Paderborn, and remains the club's most reliable finisher.
- The wide areas may swing it. Sparta hand a berth to 20-year-old Finland international C. Terho, on loan after moving from HJK Helsinki via Union SG, an inverted left-footer who lives on the cut inside. Facing that flank is 22-year-old left-back O. Aartsen, whose overlapping runs and left-footed crossing are his calling cards, while M. van Bergen, 26, adds pace and delivery from the other side.
- There is real height and experience among the substitutes. Sparta can call on Arsenal academy graduate Joel Ideho, a 23-year-old right winger built for one-v-one situations, 190cm Norwegian midfielder A. Royrsoy from Molde, and goalkeeper Filip Bednarek, 33, brother of Jan and the man who kept 42 clean sheets in 108 games for Lech Poznan. Zwolle answer with 189cm Danish striker Elias Sorensen, 26, a former Newcastle and Blackpool player, and Utrecht-schooled playmaker O. Velanas, 28.
