Match Preview
- A meeting of two sides at the wrong end of the table. Telstar sit 14th with three points from three matches and a goal difference of -5, while Cambuur are rooted to the bottom on zero points from four, having lost all of them with a -12 goal difference. With ADO Den Haag (15th), Utrecht (16th) and Willem II (17th) all stuck on a single point, whatever is won here will matter come the spring.
- Marvin Peersman lines up in Telstar's back three against a club he once served. The 35-year-old from Antwerp learned the Dutch game at Dordrecht and Cambuur before broadening his career with Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel and PAS Giannina and Aris Thessaloniki in Greece, returning home with Groningen in 2023. He joined Telstar on a free transfer this summer to bring leadership to a young defence.
- Telstar's 3-4-2-1 against Cambuur's 4-2-3-1 puts the focus on the flanks. On the left, 31-year-old Jeff Hardeveld — a Feyenoord academy product with Eredivisie mileage at Utrecht, Heracles and Emmen — supplies left-footed crosses and takes the set pieces. On the right is Gerald Alders, the 21-year-old raised at Ajax who spent six months at Telstar from February 2026 and has returned for this campaign.
- Cambuur's double pivot pairs 26-year-old Nicky Souren, who built his career at MVV and Roda, with captain Jamal Amofa, a 27-year-old centre-back by trade and the oldest man in the squad. Amofa has previous Eredivisie seasons with ADO Den Haag and Go Ahead Eagles behind him. Whether Telstar's two shadow strikers, Patrick Brouwer and Rui Mendes, can find the pockets either side of that pair may decide the rhythm of the game.
- Rui Mendes, one of Telstar's two men behind the striker, is a 26-year-old winger born in Portugal and raised in Germany. He scored 10 goals in 59 games for Hoffenheim II before hitting 15 in the Eerste Divisie with Emmen to drive a promotion push. Facing him is a notably young Cambuur back line featuring 19-year-old Ismaël Baouf, schooled at Anderlecht and Charleroi, and 21-year-old Morgan Costarelli, a 170cm Lille academy graduate.
- In the Telstar goal is Ronald Koeman Jr., son of the Netherlands manager and born in Barcelona. The 31-year-old arrived in 2021 via Almere City and TOP Oss, helped end the club's 47-year absence from the top flight, was voted their player of the year and has signed a new deal to 2028. The 188cm keeper must handle Nicolas Binder, the 24-year-old Austrian signed from Austria Klagenfurt who stands 193cm and 94kg and has only recently shaken off an injury.
- Cambuur are attacking their first top-flight season in three years with a squad averaging 22.2 years of age. Thijs Jansen, the 192cm 24-year-old from Feyenoord's academy, is in goal; 21-year-old Rafik El Arguioui wears the number 10; and Fabian Kvam, a 20-year-old signed from Mjondalen in Norway, starts in the attacking band. The bench includes 18-year-old Sami Bouhoudane, recruited from Jong PSV, and 166cm Ajax graduate Lucas Jetten, 19.
- Telstar opened the season with a 2-1 win away at NEC Nijmegen, but have since lost at home to Sparta Rotterdam (1-3) and Ajax (0-4). They have played only three matches, a game fewer than most of the division, which leaves them a match in hand as leaders PSV Eindhoven pull clear on 13 points from five. A first home win of the campaign against fellow promoted opposition is the obvious target.
- Telstar's bench is stocked with intriguing back-stories. Jelani Seedorf, 22, is the nephew of Clarence Seedorf and came through Sparta Rotterdam's youth ranks with a spell at Excelsior. Alongside him sit Emirhan Demircan, the Munich-born Türkiye Under-19 winger from Bayern's academy who featured at the 2024 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, and 22-year-old Prince Aning, developed at Borussia Dortmund.
- Cambuur have conceded 16 goals in four matches, shipping four or more in three straight home games: 0-4 to Excelsior, 2-5 to Feyenoord and 1-4 to Twente. Telstar are hardly watertight either, having let in eight in three. Goals look likely, and the hosts have picked aggressively — 27-year-old Tyrone Owusu, a striker by trade, starts in the four-man midfield band to help them push forward.
