Match Preview
- PSV arrive unbeaten: four wins and a draw from five matches, 13 points, third place, and a goal difference of plus-12 from 18 scored and six conceded. Sparta Rotterdam are 12th on five points, having won once, drawn twice and lost twice, with nine scored and nine conceded. With AZ Alkmaar leading on 16 points from six and Feyenoord on 14, PSV have a game in hand but no margin for slips.
- The hosts' recent run explains the table. After opening with a 2-2 home draw against Fortuna Sittard, PSV won 2-1 at Excelsior, thumped Groningen 5-1 at home, then produced a 6-1 demolition away at Utrecht before beating Ajax 3-1 in Amsterdam on matchday five. Four straight wins, with each of the last three decided by two goals or more.
- Sparta keep drawing games they need to win. A 1-0 home defeat to Feyenoord was followed by a 3-1 win at Telstar, then a 3-3 home draw with Utrecht, a 1-2 loss at Excelsior and a 2-2 home draw with PEC Zwolle. Both of their last two home fixtures ended level after conceding multiple goals, which is the concern heading into Eindhoven.
- Japan midfielder Kota Sano starts in the PSV engine room. The 22-year-old right-footed central midfielder moved from Fagiano Okayama to NEC Nijmegen before reaching Eindhoven, and is valued for ball-winning and clean distribution in both phases. He played at a World Cup with Japan's under-20 side and is the younger brother of Kaishu Sano of Mainz. Here he forms a three-man midfield with Paul Wanner and Guus Til.
- Wanner is the creative spark. Still only 20, the left-footed attacking midfielder holds the record as Bayern Munich's youngest ever player, scored six goals in 41 Bundesliga appearances on loan at Heidenheim, and joined PSV permanently in 2025 before making his Austria debut in March 2026. Alongside him, Til once moved from AZ to Spartak Moscow for 18 million euros and marked his PSV debut with a hat-trick against Ajax.
- Sven Mijnans faces the club that made him. The 190cm left-footed attacking midfielder, unusually delicate on the ball for his height, left Sparta Rotterdam for AZ in a deal worth around 2.5 million euros and now lines up in the PSV front line. He is not the only one: Nick Olij, the 31-year-old goalkeeper on the PSV bench, spent three seasons as Sparta's first-choice keeper.
- PSV's back line reads like a tour of Europe. Right-back Sergino Dest, the United States international, has played for Ajax, Barcelona and Milan and is comfortable carrying the ball out of defence. Lutsharel Geertruida won the Conference League with Feyenoord and spent time at RB Leipzig before joining, while left-footed centre-back Armando Obispo is trusted for his passing range. At left-back is the 171cm Mauro Junior, at the club since 2017.
- Sparta set up in a 3-4-2-1. Sonnevelt, the 188cm target man signed from Telstar, leads the line, supported by the pacy, accurate crosser Van Bergen and Terho, the 20-year-old Finland international on loan after making his name at HJK Helsinki and Union SG. Terho is a left-footed right winger who thrives cutting inside, and getting in behind PSV's high line is one of the away side's few clear routes to a result.
- The visiting back three mixes experience with youth. Bruno Martins Indi, 34, anchors the middle: a left-footed former Netherlands international who played for Feyenoord, Porto and Stoke City, valued for duels and leadership. Either side of him are 21-year-old Verschuren, a Volendam academy product, and 20-year-old Young, who came through Sparta's own youth system. How those two cope with PSV's rotations may decide the margin.
- PSV's bench offers plenty more. Ricardo Pepi, the United States striker with 13 goals in 35 caps, waits alongside Ivan Perisic, the 37-year-old Croatia veteran with 142 caps and 33 international goals, and Dennis Man, the left-footed Romanian winger who moved from FCSB to Parma for a Romanian-record 11 million euros. Sparta counter with attacking midfielder Toornstra, a winner of the Eredivisie title and two KNVB Cups during his time at Feyenoord.
