Match Preview
- Third-placed Feyenoord (14 points, 4W-2D-0L) host 14th-placed Utrecht (five points, 1W-2D-3L) as the only unbeaten side left after six rounds. Their numbers stand out: 20 goals scored, seven conceded, a goal difference of +13. With PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar both on 16 points from the same six games, Feyenoord cannot afford to slip at home.
- Feyenoord's scoring has exploded on the road. They won 5-2 at Cambuur in round 3, 3-1 at NEC Nijmegen in round 5 and then 7-0 at PEC Zwolle in round 6 - 15 goals in three away trips. At home it has been a different story, with 2-2 draws against GO Ahead Eagles in round 2 and ADO Den Haag in round 4, so converting home dominance into three points is the unspoken theme of their season.
- Utrecht have shipped 19 goals in six matches. They were beaten 1-4 at home by AZ Alkmaar and 1-6 at home by PSV, and drew two shoot-outs 3-3, away at Sparta Rotterdam and at home to GO Ahead Eagles. The one bright spot came in round 6, a 2-1 win at Excelsior for their first victory of the campaign, and they arrive hoping that was a turning point.
- Japan international centre-back Go Watanabe, 29 and 184cm, starts in the Feyenoord back line. He moved from FC Tokyo to Kortrijk and then Gent, where he made 100 competitive appearances and wore the armband as game captain. His hang time in the air, his reading for interceptions and his shot-blocking inside the box will matter against a Utrecht side that can aim set pieces at 198cm defender Mattis Didden.
- There is a reunion in midfield: Feyenoord's Zivai Zekiel, 22 and just 171cm, spent a loan spell at Utrecht after coming through the academies of Sparta Rotterdam and Feyenoord. A Netherlands Under-21 international, he is a link player whose agility and close control let him escape pressure in tight areas, and he faces the club that gave him first-team minutes.
- The shape battle pits Feyenoord's 4-3-3 against Utrecht's 3-4-3. The flanks of Utrecht's midfield four belong to Arthur Zagre, the 24-year-old Frenchman who stands just 168cm and came through Paris Saint-Germain before spells at Monaco and Dijon, and Denmark's Niklas Vesterlund, 27, a Copenhagen youth product who played all 30 league matches and scored five times at Tromso. The space behind them when they push on is Feyenoord's obvious target.
- Anis Hadj Moussa gives Feyenoord their sharpest one-on-one threat. The 24-year-old Algeria international, born in Paris, is left-footed and lives off cutting inside from the right, having climbed from the Belgian lower leagues via Vitesse before signing a five-year deal. Overlapping behind him is 20-year-old right-back Zivairo Reid, named the club's third captain, who became the youngest player ever to feature for Volendam's second team at 15.
- Feyenoord's engine room is stacked. Morocco international Ousama Targhalline, 24 and 186cm, learned his trade in Marseille's academy before a stint at Le Havre, while Belgium's Vanhoutte, 28, made 106 appearances for Union Saint-Gilloise and takes set pieces. Utrecht's answer is Dani de Wit, 28, an Ajax youth graduate who broke through at AZ Alkmaar and later played in the Bundesliga with Bochum, looking to find pockets between the lines.
- Both goalkeepers are giants. Tjark Ernst, Feyenoord's 23-year-old German, is 193cm and was raised at Hertha Berlin, where he built a reputation for dealing with crosses. Vasilis Barkas, 32, is a 196cm left-footed Greece international who moved from AEK Athens to Celtic before landing in the Eredivisie. Given Utrecht's 19 goals conceded, his afternoon may define the margin.
- The benches tilt heavily one way. Feyenoord can introduce Sem Steijn, 24, the 2024-25 Eredivisie top scorer and player of the year signed from Twente for a club-record fee, plus Mali winger Gaoussou Diarra, 23, who scored 15 goals in 34 games for Istanbulspor. Utrecht counter with the experience of Joris van Overeem, 32, who has already made 116 appearances for the club across four seasons, and 193cm Croatian centre-back Jakov Medic, 28, a veteran of 65 matches at St Pauli.
