Match Preview
- Both sides line up in a 4-2-3-1, but their league positions could hardly be more different. Go Ahead Eagles sit ninth on 10 points from seven games (2W-4D-1L) with a goal difference of +2, while Sparta Rotterdam are 12th on five points (1W-2D-4L) at -7. Sparta are level on points with 13th-placed Telstar and 14th-placed Cambuur, a world away from leaders PSV Eindhoven on 19.
- Go Ahead Eagles simply cannot stop drawing. A 3-3 at Utrecht in round five was followed by 1-1 at home to Groningen and another 1-1 away at NEC Nijmegen, making it three stalemates in a row and four draws in seven matches. With 16 goals scored, the attack is working, but they have not won since their only defeat, a 5-2 reverse at AZ Alkmaar in round four.
- Sparta's problem is at the other end: 17 conceded and only 10 scored in seven outings. They shipped four in back-to-back fixtures, losing 4-1 at PSV in round six and then 4-0 at home to Heerenveen in round seven. Including the 2-2 home draw with PEC Zwolle, that is two draws and three defeats in their last five, with 17th-placed ADO Den Haag on two points not far below.
- Two Sparta starters face a former employer. Bas Kuipers, 32, came through a well-travelled career that took in Go Ahead Eagles, NEC Nijmegen, ADO Den Haag, Ajax, Twente and Romanian side Viitorul Constanta, and he brings that experience to the back line. Goalkeeper Mikael Brouwer, 33 and 189cm, also has Go Ahead Eagles on his CV alongside Heracles Almelo and FC Emmen.
- The Eagles' attack has a distinctly Nordic flavour. Stefan Ingi Sigurdarson, the 23-year-old Iceland international who stands 191cm, leads the line after moving from Sandefjord having been developed at Breidablik. Behind him are Denmark's Soren Tengstedt, 26 and 187cm, who scored 18 goals in 84 games for Silkeborg IF, and Sweden's Viktor Edvardsen, 30, a product of the Djurgarden and IFK Goteborg school.
- The double pivots will decide who controls the tempo. Go Ahead Eagles pair Mats Meulensteen, 27, a Manchester United academy graduate with Sampdoria on his record, alongside Evert Linthorst, 26, a box-to-box midfielder schooled at PSV who has been at the club since 2022. Sparta drop Toornstra, an attacking midfielder who won the Eredivisie and two KNVB Cups at Feyenoord, into the deeper role next to 21-year-old Verschuren, a centre-back by trade.
- There is plenty to watch between the back lines too. Joris Kramer, the 30-year-old left-footed centre-back schooled at AZ Alkmaar, anchors the Eagles defence alongside 22-year-old Giovanni van Zwam of Vitesse and Dean James, an Ajax and Volendam product who opted to represent Indonesia in 2025. Sparta's 34-year-old Bruno Martins Indi, a former Netherlands international with Porto and Stoke City behind him, shepherds 21-year-old academy man Young while long balls target 188cm forward Zonneveld, signed from Telstar.
- Both benches offer game-changers. Go Ahead Eagles can call on Oscar Sivertsen, the 22-year-old left-footed winger from Kristiansund BK who made his Eliteserien debut at 16, or go direct with 191cm Suriname international Ricconel Margaret. Sparta have Finland international Terho, a 20-year-old left-footed right winger of 170cm on loan after spells at HJK Helsinki and Union SG, whose cutting inside runs can shift a game.
