Match Preview
- Fourth-placed Twente (5W-1D-1L, 16 points from seven games) travel to sixth-placed Fortuna Sittard (4W-1D-2L, 13 points) for this matchday-eight fixture. Only three points separate the sides, so a home win would flip their positions in the table. Both are chasing leaders PSV Eindhoven (19 points from eight) and AZ Alkmaar (19), and this is their first meeting of the campaign.
- Twente arrive on a run of W-D-W-W-W, capped by a 3-2 home win over league leaders PSV in round seven. They also shut out ADO Den Haag 2-0 a week earlier and have conceded just seven goals in seven matches for a goal difference of plus eight. Fortuna, by contrast, sit at minus one, so breaking down this organised block is the home side's central problem.
- Fortuna's recent record is strikingly lopsided: all three of their wins in the last five games came on the road, at Groningen (2-3), ADO Den Haag (2-3) and Willem II (0-1) in round seven. At home they were beaten 0-2 by AZ in round three and 1-5 by Ajax in round six. That split explains why a side on 13 points has scored 13 and conceded 14, and why their own ground has become the area to fix.
- Twente lead the line with 34-year-old Wout Weghorst, a 197cm Netherlands international who scored 70 goals in 144 games for Wolfsburg and has worn the shirts of Manchester United, Burnley and Besiktas. His hold-up play and box presence will be tested by Fortuna's tall back line: 191cm Brazilian centre-back Rodrigo Gout, left-footed 185cm centre-back Van Otterle and 192cm goalkeeper Branderhorst.
- The central midfield offers a duel between two 23-year-old Frenchmen from the Paris Saint-Germain academy. Fortuna's Michut, once labelled the 'new Verratti', is a left-footed central midfielder who arrived via Sunderland and Adana Demirspor. Twente's Vaitmann came through the same PSG youth system, moved on to Torino and earned his move in 2025 after impressing at RKC Waalwijk as a box-to-box runner.
- Fortuna's creative hub is 24-year-old Ihattaren, the left-footed attacking midfielder hailed as a prodigy in PSV's academy before a teenage move to Juventus, with later spells at Sampdoria, Ajax and RKC. Twente answer with Ramiz Zerrouki, the 28-year-old Algeria international who has made 108 appearances for the club and returned on loan from Feyenoord in 2025. Denying Ihattaren time on that left foot is Zerrouki's job.
- There is a Croatian subplot down the flank. Fortuna captain Ivo Pinto, a 36-year-old right-back, won four Croatian league titles with Dinamo Zagreb and played Premier League football with Norwich City. Lining up opposite him is Twente left winger Marko Pjaca, 27, another Dinamo Zagreb product who was part of Croatia's 2018 World Cup runners-up squad and has since played for Juventus, Schalke and Fiorentina.
- Twente's defence pairs an 18-year-old with a veteran: academy centre-back Ruud Nijstad, born in 2008 and 188cm tall, alongside 33-year-old Robin Propper (190cm), a former club captain who returned in 2025 after a season with Rangers. The full-backs are 22-year-old Dane Aske Adelgaard, previously with Go Ahead Eagles, and 25-year-old Bart van Rooij, who spent more than five Eredivisie seasons at NEC Nijmegen. Behind them stands returning goalkeeper Joel Drommel, 29, a two-time league champion with PSV.
- Fortuna centre-back Justin Hubner, 23, carries a J.League connection: raised in Wolverhampton Wanderers' academy, the 187cm defender spent time at Cerezo Osaka before taking Indonesian nationality in 2023 and making his international debut. Another Indonesia international waits on the bench in 26-year-old forward Ole Romeny (189cm), formerly of FC Utrecht and NEC Nijmegen, an obvious late option if the hosts need more aerial presence.
- Fortuna's striker is 21-year-old Zeefuik, on loan from AZ Alkmaar and, like Weghorst, standing 197cm. A product of FC Volendam's youth setup who moved to AZ and spent time at OH Leuven, he relies on heading and hold-up work. Waiting in reserve is 31-year-old Swedish left winger Kristoffer Peterson, a Liverpool academy graduate who scored 12 goals for Heracles in 2018-19 and played Championship football with Swansea City.
