Match Preview
- Fifth-placed Twente (17 points, 5-2-1) host 14th-placed Utrecht (8 points, 2-2-4) in matchday 9, and the defensive records could hardly be more different: the hosts have conceded just eight goals in eight games for a +8 goal difference, while the visitors have shipped 25 and sit on -11. Victory would lift Twente to 20 points, level with second-placed AZ Alkmaar, with leaders Feyenoord on 23 from nine.
- Twente are unbeaten in five, taking three wins and two draws. They ground out 1-0 against Telstar and 2-0 against ADO Den Haag at home before beating third-placed PSV 3-2 in round 7. On the road they drew 2-2 at Groningen and 1-1 at Fortuna Sittard last time out, and they have still lost only once all season.
- Utrecht, by contrast, swing wildly from week to week. They were thrashed 6-1 at home by PSV in round 4 and 5-0 away at Feyenoord in round 7, yet they also won 2-1 at Excelsior and beat bottom side Willem II 3-1 at home in the last round. With 14 goals scored in eight matches the attack functions; the 25 conceded is the problem.
- The headline duel is a clash of giants: 197cm Wout Weghorst against 198cm Matisse Didden. Weghorst, 34, scored 70 goals in 144 games for Wolfsburg and has worn the shirts of Manchester United, Burnley and Beşiktaş, thriving on hold-up play and penalty-box instincts. Didden, a 25-year-old Belgian raised at Genk and developed at Roda JC, brings 91kg of physicality to Utrecht's back three.
- Twente attack through two inverted wide men. On the left, No. 27 Sondre Ørjasæter is a 22-year-old Norwegian signed from Sarpsborg 08 who is right-footed and cuts inside; on the right, academy graduate Daan Rots is left-footed and looks to curl shots in from that flank. Utrecht's 3-4-3 asks 168cm Arthur Zagré, a PSG academy product who also played for Monaco, and Danish wide man Niklas Vesterlund to cover those lanes.
- The midfield battle has plenty of pedigree. Twente's double pivot pairs Algeria international Ramiz Zerrouki — a club icon with 108 appearances who is back on loan from Feyenoord — with 23-year-old Frenchman Daouda Weidmann, a PSG academy graduate who passed through Torino and RKC Waalwijk. Utrecht counter with 32-year-old Joris van Overeem, who has 116 games for the club and spells at AZ and Maccabi Tel Aviv behind him.
- Playing off Weghorst is Iceland international Kristian Hlynsson, 22, who moved from Breiðablik to Ajax's academy and scored 11 goals for Jong Ajax before a loan at Sparta Rotterdam and a permanent switch to Twente in 2025. His runs beyond the striker are exactly the sort of movement that can pull apart a back three.
- Utrecht's front three is a well-travelled trio. Left-sided Yoann Cathline is a left-footed Frenchman schooled at Guingamp with France U20 caps and a spell at Lorient; central figure Dani de Wit, 28, came through Ajax, broke out at AZ and later played for Bochum; on the right, 22-year-old Spaniard Ángel Alarcón has Barcelona B and Porto on his CV. At 14 goals in eight games they remain dangerous even when the defence wobbles.
- Twente's back line mixes experience with raw youth. Robin Pröpper, 33, is the 190cm former club captain who returned in 2025 after a season with Rangers, and alongside him stands 188cm centre-back Ruud Nijstad, an academy product born in 2008. Behind them is 192cm goalkeeper Joël Drommel, back at his old club after winning back-to-back Eredivisie titles and the KNVB Cup with PSV.
- Both benches offer real options. Twente can introduce Croatia winger Marko Pjaca, a 2018 World Cup runner-up with Juventus, Schalke and Fiorentina in his past, plus holding midfielder Thomas van den Belt, who scored six goals in 40 games on loan at CD Castellón before joining from Feyenoord. Utrecht hold back 193cm Croatian centre-back Jakov Medić, a veteran of 65 matches at St. Pauli, and Watford-raised England youth international Adrian Blake.
