Founded on 1 April 1888, Sparta Rotterdam are the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. Based in the Spangen district, they have won six league titles — though the most recent dates back to 1959.
The 2025-26 season features a rare occurrence: all three Rotterdam professional clubs — Feyenoord, Sparta, and Excelsior — competing in the Eredivisie simultaneously.
Maurice Steijn, appointed in November 2024, enters his second season after rescuing the club from relegation danger in the second half of last season.
He blends experienced veterans (Jonathan de Guzman, Patrick van Aanholt, Jens Toornstra) with energetic youth to create a balanced squad.
In use since 1916, Het Kasteel ("The Castle") takes its name from the two tower-like structures at its entrance. Renovated in 1999, it holds 11,026 spectators and exudes a historic charm befitting the nation's oldest professional club.
