Born in 1965 from the merger of Sportclub Enschede and Enschedesche Boys, FC Twente represent the eastern province of Overijssel. Their 2010 Eredivisie title remains one of the great underdog stories in Dutch football, breaking the traditional Big Three monopoly.
A financial crisis led to relegation to the Eerste Divisie in 2018, but the club bounced back within a year. Twente continue to rebuild with a strong regional identity, dreaming of another European adventure.
After Joseph Oosting was dismissed in September 2025, John van den Brom took charge. In January 2026, club legend Erik ten Hag returned as Technical Director to help shape the long-term vision.
Twente traditionally favour a compact, defensively solid approach with quick transitions into attack. High pressing from the front and midfield industry are hallmarks of their play.
The De Grolsch Veste holds 30,205 spectators, the largest football stadium in eastern Netherlands. The passionate atmosphere is often referred to as the "12th man."
The 2000 Enschede fireworks disaster devastated the surrounding neighbourhood but the stadium survived. The tragedy only deepened the bond between club and city.
