- Doncaster set up in a 4-1-4-1 at home, with No.22 R. Gotts sitting alone in front of the back four and a band of four — H. Adelakun (47), J. Gibson (11), O. Bailey (4) and L. Molyneux (7) — supporting lone forward F. Okoronkwo (19). It is a classic cup shape: block the middle, deny clean build-up and keep the tie level for as long as possible.
- Japan midfielder Kuryu Matsuki starts for Southampton. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder came through Aomori Yamada high school and FC Tokyo before moving to Europe, and scored six goals with five assists during a loan at Göztepe. At 180cm he is a genuinely combative presence with a reliable left foot, and his duels against Doncaster's four-man midfield band could decide who controls the game.
- Southampton's last line is built on height. Goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, a 195cm Israel international on loan from Bayern Munich, has kept five clean sheets in his first 12 appearances and is comfortable claiming crosses — useful insurance against the long balls and set-piece pressure that cup ties like this tend to produce.
- The centre-back pairing brings contrasting backgrounds. Taylor Harwood-Bellis, 23 and 188cm, is a Manchester City academy product who helped Burnley win the Championship and prefers to play out from the back. Joshua Quarshie, 21 and 196cm, came through Hoffenheim's academy, has Bundesliga minutes behind him and offers raw aerial and physical strength.
- Both full-backs are attack-minded imports. On the right, Denmark international Elias Jelert, 22, stands only 170cm but has Champions League experience with FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, pressing aggressively and delivering accurate crosses. On the left, Brazilian Welington, 24, made 164 appearances for São Paulo and won the 2023 Copa do Brasil, offering left-footed service and one-v-one threat.
- Flynn Downes anchors the midfield. The 26-year-old defensive midfielder once posted a 92.6% pass completion rate at Swansea, the best in England's top four divisions, and won the Europa Conference League with West Ham. Alongside him is academy graduate Cameron Bragg, 20, a Scotland Under-21 midfielder who debuted against Blackburn in October 2025 and scored his first professional goal in this very competition.
- Southampton's wide players are both on steep upward curves. Tom Fellows, 21, came through West Bromwich Albion and registered 14 assists in the 2024-25 Championship, the most by any winger in the division. Jay Robinson, 18, joined the club at 12 and played Under-21 football at 15; right-footed, he cuts in from the left. Leading the line is Cameron Archer, 24, a 2023 European Under-21 Championship winner signed for £15m.
- The visitors' bench carries genuine end product too. Leo Scienza, 27, is a two-footed Brazilian who arrived from Heidenheim and has 6 goals and 8 assists in 2025-26. Ross Stewart, 29 and 188cm, once won the League One Golden Boot with 26 goals for Sunderland, while German midfielder Kasper Jander, 22, contributed 3 goals and 9 assists in 32 games for Nürnberg.
- For Doncaster, T. Lo-Tutala (29) starts in goal behind centre-backs J. McGrath (6) and M. Pearson (5), with J. Sterry (2) and J. Senior (23) as full-backs. Forwards B. Hanlan (9) and B. Sharp (14) wait on the bench, giving the hosts the option to commit numbers late on if the tie is still alive — the traditional route to an upset.
