Club History

Founded in 1922 as Kyoto Shiko Club, the team boasts the oldest origins of any club currently competing in the J.League. The club turned professional in 1994 and joined the J.League as Kyoto Purple Sanga in 1996, adopting its current name in 2007. The name "Sanga" is derived from the Sanskrit word for "community" or "gathering," echoing Kyoto's deep connection with its many Buddhist temples.

The club's signature purple reflects Kyoto's heritage as Japan's ancient imperial capital, where the colour has long symbolized nobility and prestige. Kyoto spent many years as an "elevator club" moving between J1 and J2, but since earning promotion back to J1 in 2022 -- ending a 12-season absence -- they have firmly re-established themselves in the top flight.

Notable historical connections include Park Ji-sung, who played for the club before his move to Manchester United, and Nintendo, which served as a shirt sponsor for many years -- a link that attracted international curiosity.

Cho Kwi-jae and Tactics

Manager Cho Kwi-jae has transformed Kyoto Sanga since his appointment in 2021. In his first year, he led the club to the J2 title and promotion. Now in his sixth season at the helm, Cho has built a side defined by high-intensity pressing and rapid transitions that extract maximum effort and intelligence from every player.

His teams are particularly formidable on the road -- in 2025, Kyoto recorded the best away points tally in the entire J1 League. The willingness to impose their style regardless of venue has become a core part of the club's identity under Cho.

Sanga Stadium by Kyocera

Opened in 2020, Sanga Stadium by Kyocera is located in Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture. This 21,600-seat football-specific venue was built as Kyoto's first dedicated professional football stadium, with Kyocera securing a 20-year naming rights deal worth approximately 2 billion yen.

The stadium's compact design places fans close to the pitch, creating an intense matchday atmosphere. Just a short walk from JR Kameoka station, the venue is surrounded by Kyoto's celebrated attractions -- from Hozugawa river rafting to nearby Arashiyama -- making it a popular away-day destination for visiting supporters.
