- 16th-placed Kyoto Sanga (16 points from 14 games) take on 8th-placed Sanfrecce Hiroshima (22 points from 16 games). Kyoto are winless across their last five with two draws and three losses and were beaten 0-3 by Nagoya Grampus last time out. Hiroshima, by contrast, have been steady with two wins, two draws and a loss in their last five and beat Gamba Osaka 1-0 away last time. With Kyoto just two points clear of 17th-placed, drop-zone Mito (14 points), a home win is an urgent need.
- In this season's first meeting in Matchday 4, there was an upset as Hiroshima lost 1-2 to Kyoto at home. Kyoto are in a tough relegation battle, but the record of taking three points off Hiroshima should give them confidence. Kyoto have struggled for goals with 17 scored and 20 conceded in 14 games, and much rests on the finishing of Brazilian forward Rafael Elias (formerly of SE Palmeiras and Kyoto Sanga's all-time top scorer in the J.League).
- In Kyoto's 4-3-3, the 185cm Brazilian holding midfielder Joao Pedro (an EC Vitoria product whose dynamic style draws comparisons to Yaya Toure and Pogba) reigns in midfield. Yun Seong-jun (born 2007, a Kyoto academy product and South Korea U-18 international) is a gem who earned a pro contract while still in high school, possessing every quality required in midfield at a high level: defensive intensity, dribbling drive, wide vision and passing distribution.
- In Hiroshima's 3-4-2-1, current Japan international Shun Kawabe (with playing experience across four European countries and his first international goal against Tajikistan in 2021) reigns at the heart of midfield. Yasushi Matsumoto (a 2019 Copa America Japan representative who returned to his former club within a year of leaving Urawa Reds) waits on the bench, underlining their midfield depth. Up front, Sota Nakamura (born 2002, 168cm), who swept the Kanto League Golden Boot, assist crown and MVP at Meiji University, looks to break forward from a deeper position.
- Kyoto deploy Tenma Matsuda (born 1995, 164cm, a Shonan Bellmare product) on the left. Known as a 'dynamo' who covers every blade of grass with his abundant running, he energises the team's transitions with split-second decision-making and mobility. By contrast, Hiroshima's right side is handled by Naruto Nakano (born 2000, 182cm), who can play CB, WB and pivot, countering with his technique on the ball and high contribution in build-up.
- Hiroshima veteran Tsukasa Shiotani (born 1988, with overseas experience at Al Ain and a Japan representative at the 2015 and 2019 Asian Cups) joins the attack from centre-back with fierce long-range shots and accurate distribution. Kyoto's goalkeeper Shoken Murakami (who experienced promotion to J1 with Avispa Fukuoka) is set to start, and the keeper's resilience could decide the outcome. With Kyoto fighting for survival and Hiroshima aiming to settle in mid-table, a fierce battle for three points is in prospect.
