- This meeting between currently 16th-placed Kyoto Sanga (16 points from 15 games) and 13th-placed V-Varen Nagasaki (20 points from 17 games) is an important game for both as they try to break out of the relegation battle. Kyoto have struggled with two draws and three losses in their last five (D-L-D-L-L), including a heavy 0-4 defeat to Sanfrecce Hiroshima last time out. Nagasaki have also been inconsistent with two wins, two losses and a draw in their last five (W-L-W-L-D).
- In Kyoto's attack, Masaya Okugawa (30, RW), who has returned to his former club after nine and a half years, will be a key player. His greatest weapons are his two-footed dribbling and accurate set pieces, and he leads the team with European-honed technique and intelligence from his Bundesliga experience. CF Rafael Elias (27) offers physical hold-up play and space-making, and his link-up with Okugawa holds the key to the attack.
- Nagasaki's midfield is reigned over by former Japan international Hotaru Yamaguchi (35, CDM). The veteran, who joined after spells at Cerezo Osaka, Hannover 96 and Vissel Kobe, controls games with abundant experience and wide vision despite his small 173cm frame. His partner Diego Pituca (33, CM) is a Brazilian who won the 2018 ACL with Kashima Antlers and builds the team's attack with his playmaking and distribution.
- In this season's Matchday 7 meeting, Kyoto won 2-1 away at Nagasaki. In that game Kyoto took their chances efficiently on the counter and saw off Nagasaki's pride at home. This time host Kyoto aim to end a losing run, while Nagasaki seek revenge away from home.
- Tactically, the match-up of Kyoto's 4-3-3 against Nagasaki's 3-4-2-1 will draw attention. Against Nagasaki's back three, Kyoto look to exploit numerical superiority out wide, with Okugawa and Haruki Arai pinning themselves to the touchline to create the launchpad for attacks. Nagasaki, meanwhile, look to use midfield numbers to create a four-against-three superiority over Kyoto's central three and control the rhythm with the double pivot of Yamaguchi and Pituca.
- Up front for Nagasaki is former Urawa Reds man Thiago Santana (33, CF). His weapons are his aerial strength and hold-up play from his 184cm frame, and he has a record of prolific scoring from his J2 days. Kyoto's CB pairing (Yoshinori Suzuki and Hisashi Appiah Tawiah) must prepare for his height, and their defending at set pieces in particular will be tested.
- Both teams are well adrift of leaders Kashima Antlers (34 points from 15 games) and are in the thick of the relegation battle. With the gaps to 17th-placed Mito Hollyhock (14 points from 16 games) and 18th-placed Yokohama F. Marinos (14 points from 16 games) also small, the result of this game is highly likely to significantly affect the standings going forward.
