Match Preview
- Both Cerezo Osaka and Fagiano Okayama begin the 2027 J1 season here on matchday 1. Of the four clubs already in action, Gamba Osaka and Kashima lead the way on three points. This is a mirror match of 3-4-2-1 shapes, so the early questions are which side's shadow strikers find pockets first and who creates the overload out wide.
- Shinji Kagawa, now 37, occupies one of Cerezo's shadow roles. The attacking midfielder built his career at Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United before spells with Real Zaragoza, Sint-Truiden and PAOK, and he still combines soft touches in tight spaces with a quick first burst. His partner Muki Yokoyama offers the opposite profile: an explosive runner who helped FC Imabari win promotion from J3 to J2 and thrives attacking space in behind.
- Centre-forward Solomon Sakuragawa, 25, faces one of his former clubs. At 190cm and 91kg he is built for hold-up play and aerial duels, having come through the JEF Chiba academy before sharpening his finishing at Okayama and Yokohama FC. Okayama's centre-backs will not be bullied easily, though: Yugo Tatsuta stands 191cm and Hiroshi Omori 188cm, so the quality of the long-ball exchanges may set the tone.
- Sakuragawa is not the only Cerezo player with Okayama on his CV. Reoto Inoue, the 29-year-old centre-back, climbed from Gainare Tottori through Okayama and Kyoto Sanga to Urawa, and is valued for his one-on-one defending and positional reading. The bench also holds Tomoki Uwakado, the 166cm 29-year-old who played for Okayama and FC Ryukyu, giving the hosts familiar faces from the back line to the substitutes.
- Okayama have their own reunion in reserve. Towa Yamane, 27, came through Sanfrecce Hiroshima's academy but developed via Cerezo and a string of loans before establishing himself at Yokohama FC, where he played 30 J1 matches in 2025. The 167cm left-sided midfielder brings dribbling and a goal threat off the bench, and would do so against a club that shaped his early career.
- Okayama's attack is anchored by Lucao, a 191cm Brazilian who can finish with either foot. He began his professional career in North Macedonia and arrived in 2023 after spells at Kagoshima, Kanazawa and Matsumoto, since when he has featured in three straight seasons from J2 to J1. Behind him, 34-year-old Tsukasa Esaka, a former Japan international and J.League Best XI pick during his Kashiwa days, supplies accurate shots and final passes off both feet.
- The other shadow role belongs to Na Sang-ho, a 29-year-old winger with 30 caps for South Korea and a gold medal from the 2018 Asian Games. He won both MVP and the scoring title in K League 2 and knows Japanese football from FC Tokyo and FC Machida Zelvia. Right-footed but starting from the left, his cut-inside runs will be tested by Cerezo's Dion Cools, the 185cm Malaysia international who lifted the Belgian title with Club Brugge.
- In midfield Cerezo build through Shunta Tanaka, the 29-year-old anchor who stands 183cm, is strong in the air and once played as a defender at Sapporo. Okayama counter with a pair of JFA Academy Fukushima graduates: Eiji Miyamoto, 28, who covers ground and turns tackles into quick transitions, and Masaya Matsumoto, 31, a right-sided midfielder with more than 140 J1 appearances behind his dribbling and crossing.
- The goalkeeping contrast is worth watching. Kosuke Nakamura, 31, was part of Japan's 2018 World Cup squad and honed his reflex saves at Kashiwa Reysol and Portimonense. Okayama's Shun Matsuda, 26, is a 196cm sweeper of high balls who captained Aomori Yamada High School and whose brother Riku plays for JEF Chiba, while the 192cm veteran Goro Kawanami, 35, a former first-choice at Hiroshima and Niigata, waits on the bench.
