- FC Tokyo and Machida Zelvia both open the 2027 J1 season on matchday 1. Among the four clubs already in action, Gamba Osaka and Kashima sit on three points. FC Tokyo line up in a 4-4-2 while Machida use a 3-4-2-1, so the immediate puzzle is whether Machida's wing-backs pick up FC Tokyo's wide midfielders or their full-backs.
- FC Tokyo's front pair is 188cm Brazilian striker Marcelo Hian, 24, and Mikiki Nagakura, 26. Hian has 14 J1 goals to his name from spells at Sagan Tosu and Yokohama FC and combines physical hold-up play with runs in behind. Nagakura's route was unusual: he climbed from the amateur ranks with Tokyo United FC through Albirex Niigata to J1, and he was the Levain Cup's leading scorer along the way.
- Machida's focal point is 197cm centre-forward Tete Yengi, 23, an Australian who helped Livingston win promotion to the Scottish top flight and whose brother Kusini is an Australia international. FC Tokyo counter with 189cm Alexander Scholz, the 33-year-old Dane named in the J.League Best XI during his Urawa days, alongside left-footed Hayato Inamura, 24, so the aerial duels should be a genuine contest.
- There is a homecoming at right-back. Machida's Hotaka Nakamura, 28, was developed by FC Tokyo and spent his entire earlier career there, returning from a meniscus injury and a ruptured Achilles tendon to rebuild at Machida. In the other direction, FC Tokyo's bench holds 34-year-old Teruhito Nakagawa, a former Machida player and the 160cm winger who won both the J1 golden boot and MVP award in 2019.
- One duel to isolate is on FC Tokyo's left. Kota Tawarazumi came through the club's own U-18 side and earned a Japan call-up on the back of the awkward-rhythm dribbling that has drawn Kaoru Mitoma comparisons. Nakamura, who patrols Machida's right flank and is respected for his one-on-one defending, is a former team-mate, adding an extra layer to a matchup that could decide who owns that touchline.
- On the opposite flank, Keio Sato, 25, does the attacking. The Meiji University graduate played for Werder Bremen and represented Japan at the Paris Olympics, and he pairs explosive pace with a habit of cutting inside. Yuta Nakayama, 29, the left-footed defender on the left of Machida's back three, brings experience from Huddersfield Town and PEC Zwolle and can cover both centre-back and full-back.
- The holding-midfield contest is heavy on international mileage. Machida field Neta Lavi, the 29-year-old Israeli who captained Maccabi Haifa to three straight domestic titles, next to Hiroyuki Mae, 31, who wore the armband at Avispa Fukuoka for five seasons. FC Tokyo answer with Uyang Ko, 28, formerly of Niigata and Gamba Osaka, and Kento Hashimoto, 32, whose career includes SD Eibar, SD Huesca and FC Rostov.
- Yuki Soma, 29, takes one of Machida's shadow roles. Standing 166cm, he relies on acceleration and agility to attack the flanks, built his reputation at Nagoya Grampus and Kashima Antlers, and spent time abroad with Casa Pia in Portugal. His partner is 35-year-old Mitchell Duke, an Australia international, giving Machida two experienced operators between the lines.
- Machida's defensive spine has serious pedigree. Gen Shoji, 33, was a first-choice centre-back for Japan at the 2018 World Cup and brings the line-management he honed at Kashima and Toulouse. To his right, Daihachi Okamura, 29, is a 183cm, 85kg competitor who worked his way up from the JFL, while goalkeeper Kosei Tani, 25, uses his 190cm reach and played every minute of the Tokyo Olympics.
- Both benches carry match-changers. FC Tokyo can call on 39-year-old Masato Morishige, a five-time J.League Best XI selection, plus the 164cm Shion Homma, a former Club Brugge player, and free-kick specialist Fuki Yamada, 25. Machida hold back Takuma Nishimura, 29, who scored 10 goals in 27 league games for Yokohama F. Marinos, Shota Fujio, 25, a key figure in their J2 title and promotion, and 18-year-old Fuuta Tokumura, a double high-school championship winner with Kamimura Gakuen.
