Match Preview
- This is the season opener for both clubs, and the last fixture of matchday 1. The other 16 sides have already played: Machida Zelvia lead the table on three points with a goal difference of +4, with Sanfrecce Hiroshima second on +3. Tokyo Verdy line up at home in a 3-4-2-1 while Kawasaki Frontale travel with a 4-2-3-1, promising an interesting structural mismatch from the first whistle.
- Kawasaki's number three, centre-back Taniguchi, returns to face the club that raised him. The 26-year-old spent 13 years at Tokyo Verdy from his primary school days and was a defensive pillar of their promotion to J1 before moving on. He combines genuine strength in duels with the passing range to build from the back, and also carries a set-piece goal threat, making his afternoon against familiar opponents the headline storyline.
- Verdy's wing-backs will decide how the shapes interact. Shuhei Mizoguchi, a 22-year-old natural left-back from the Kashima academy with an accomplished left foot and caps at Japan youth levels, takes the left flank, while Yosuke Uchida, 23, a runner-up at the national high school championship with Aomori Yamada before joining via Meiji University, patrols the right. They face Tatsuya Ito and Kazuya Konno head-on, and whether the space outside Verdy's back three is exploited or defended will set the tone.
- Kawasaki hold the edge in central midfield quality. Yuki Yamamoto, 28, a Kansai Gakuin University graduate with outstanding tactical reading, supplies the unexpected through balls and switches of play, while Kento Tachibanada, 28, nicknamed the Japanese Kante, covers every blade of grass and wins the ball back. Verdy's answer is Rei Hirakawa, 26, once labelled a prodigy in the FC Tokyo academy and a U-17 World Cup participant, who must match that double pivot in duels and distribution.
- The visitors' attacking band carries serious end product. Tatsuya Ito, 29, spent years in Europe with Hamburger SV, Sint-Truiden and 1. FC Magdeburg before scoring 13 league goals in 2025 and earning a place in the J1 Best XI. Yasuto Wakizaka, 31, sits centrally after being named in the Best XI three seasons running from 2021, with the 161cm left-footed Konno cutting in from the right and K. Mochiyama, wearing number 20, leading the line.
- Verdy build around Itsuki Someno, the 24-year-old centre-forward who finished top scorer at the national high school championship with Shoshi High School, supported by two shadow strikers. Yuya Fukuda, 27, won both the Inter-High and the championship with Higashi Fukuoka and brings raw speed, while academy graduate Yuan Matsuhashi, 24, has been at the club since primary school and sharpened his edge on loan spells at SC Sagamihara and Renofa Yamaguchi. Someno's willingness to press from the front could spark quick transitions.
- Verdy's back three is anchored by Naoki Hayashi, the 28-year-old centre-back who wore the prestigious number 23 at Kashima Antlers and reads danger before it develops. Kazuya Miyahara, 30, with Nagoya Grampus and Sanfrecce Hiroshima on his CV, takes the right side, and 182cm Kaito Suzuki, 23, a Paris Olympic generation U-23 international, the left. At 170cm Miyahara gives up height, but his reputation for smothering powerful forwards will be tested by Kawasaki's width.
- Both goalkeepers are experienced overseas operators. Verdy field the 189cm Brazilian Matheus, 33, a Corinthians academy product who played all 42 J2 matches in 2023 to help end a 16-year wait for promotion. Kawasaki have Svend Brodersen, the 29-year-old German who came through FC St. Pauli, won promotion with Yokohama FC and Fagiano Okayama, and uses both feet accurately to start attacks from deep.
- The benches offer contrasting routes to change the game. Kawasaki can call on Marcinho, the explosive 31-year-old Brazilian winger, Serbian centre-forward Lazar Romanic, 28, a former U-19 international, and academy graduate Ten Miyagi, 25. Verdy counter with youth: 166cm dribbler Yuta Arai, 23, 18-year-old Shion Nakayama who has represented Japan at every level from U-15, and S. Teranuma, 25, who scored seven goals in 38 league games at Mito Hollyhock.
