Match Preview
- The opening weekend could hardly have gone more differently for these two. JEF United Chiba were beaten 3-0 away at Sanfrecce Hiroshima and sit 19th on zero points with a minus-three goal difference. Machida Zelvia went to FC Tokyo and won 5-1, and their plus-four goal difference is the best in the division, better even than leaders Kashiwa Reysol, who have six points from two matches. Chiba need a response at home.
- Both teams set up in a 3-4-2-1, turning this into a mirror match where the flanks and the channels outside the back three decide everything. Chiba use 31-year-old right wing-back Takahiro Iida, a veteran of J1 and J2 spells with Shimizu S-Pulse, Kyoto Sanga and Ventforet Kofu, with Takumi Tsukui, 24, on the opposite side. Machida counter with Hotaka Nakamura at right wing-back and Takahiro Akimoto, 28, on the left.
- The centre-forward duel is a study in contrasts. Machida's Tete Yengi is 23 and stands 197cm, an Australian who helped Livingston win promotion in Scotland after time with Ipswich Town and the Newcastle Jets. Chiba's Elison, 27, is a left-footed Brazilian at 180cm and 84kg who once finished as Botafogo's top scorer with 15 goals in a single Brazilian championship season. Aerial duels and knock-downs will shape the tempo.
- Machida's back three carries serious international pedigree. Gen Shoji, 33, was a first-choice centre-back at the 2018 World Cup and brings the organisational habits he built at Kashima Antlers and Toulouse. Yuta Nakayama, 29, is a left-footed defender with European experience at PEC Zwolle and Huddersfield Town, and his long diagonals are the side's main escape route under pressure. Daihachi Okamura, 183cm and 85kg, made his name winning duels for Consadole Sapporo.
- Chiba answer with youth in the two shadow roles. Takumi Matsumura, 22, is a rookie who won both the scoring and assist crowns in the Kanto university second division with Takushoku University; his older brother Yuta plays for Kashima Antlers. Beside him is Makoto Himeno, an academy graduate promoted to the first team in his second year of high school, who has represented Japan at U-17 level in both the AFC U-17 Asian Cup and the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
- There is a familiar face on the Chiba bench. Takuya Yasui, 27, came through the Vissel Kobe academy, won the Emperor's Cup there, and later helped FC Machida Zelvia earn promotion to J1. A fractured tibia in 2024 interrupted his career, and he returned via a loan spell at FC Imabari. Anyone who knows Machida's midfield rhythms from the inside is a useful card for the hosts to hold.
- Machida's Hotaka Nakamura, 29, lists FC Tokyo as his only previous club, and having already faced his former side in that 5-1 win on the opening day, he now settles into life at right wing-back. He has fought back from a torn meniscus and a ruptured Achilles tendon. Ahead of him, 166cm winger Yuki Soma, 29, brings the dribbling and crossing he honed at Nagoya Grampus, Casa Pia AC and Kashima Antlers.
- The deep-lying playmaker battle should be absorbing. Chiba rely on Taishi Taguchi, who spent nine seasons at Nagoya Grampus, earned a Japan call-up and was once nicknamed the Japanese Xavi for his passing rhythm. Machida pair Neta Lavi, the 29-year-old Israeli who captained Maccabi Haifa to three straight league titles before two and a half years at Gamba Osaka, with Hiroyuki Mae, 31, who wore the armband at Avispa Fukuoka for five seasons.
- The goalkeepers arrive from very different worlds. Chiba's Jose Aurelio Suarez is a Barcelona academy product who passed through Girona and Gimnastic de Tarragona before making more than 90 J2 appearances for Tokushima Vortis, and he is comfortable starting attacks with his feet. Machida's Kosei Tani is a 190cm 25-year-old who played every minute of Japan's Tokyo Olympic campaign after spells at Gamba Osaka, FCV Dender and Shonan Bellmare.
- Both benches offer late-game options. Chiba hold 200cm Portuguese forward Leonardo Rocha, 38-year-old Tsuneki Yonekura, a treble winner with Gamba Osaka, and 192cm goalkeeper Ryota Suzuki. Machida can turn to Takuma Nishimura, who scored 10 goals in 27 league games for Yokohama F. Marinos, Shota Fujio, the 25-year-old centre-forward who fired the club to the J2 title and promotion, 18-year-old Fuuta Tokumura and 192cm full-back Henry Kaiki Mochizuki with his 50-metre long throw.
