Match Preview
- Mito Hollyhock arrive in 16th place on zero points after a 2-1 defeat away at Kashiwa Reysol on the opening weekend, a -1 goal difference to show for it. That same Kashiwa side now leads the division with six points from two games, which puts Mito's opener in perspective. Gamba Osaka, meanwhile, sit fourth after winning a 4-3 thriller at home against Urawa. One side is chasing a first win of the campaign, the other a second in a row.
- Takeru Kishimoto starts at right-back for Gamba against Mito, a club he previously played for. The 29-year-old has also turned out for Shimizu, Tokushima and Cerezo Osaka, and can operate as a full-back, wing-back or winger. His explosive overlapping runs and the quality of his right-footed crossing make him one of Gamba's main outlets, so restricting that flank is high on Mito's list of tasks.
- Gamba's attacking unit spans generations. Takashi Usami, 34, became the first player in club history to be promoted early from the academy while still in high school, and later played for Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim. Leading the line is Asahi Uenaka, who hit double figures in his second season out of high school at V-Varen Nagasaki, reached an AFC Champions League final with Yokohama F. Marinos and appeared at the Paris Olympics before joining permanently in 2026. Out wide are 20-year-old Garaku Nawata, MVP of the national high school championship and both MVP and top scorer at the AFC U-17 Asian Cup, and the 164cm sprinter Ryoya Yamashita, 28.
- Mito's strike pairing is a study in contrasts. Shinta Watanabe, 31 and 171cm, captained Oita Trinita earlier in his career and won monthly MVP awards in back-to-back months after joining Mito, a reflection of his instinct in front of goal. Beside him stands 186cm Kotaro Uchino, 21, the leading scorer at the national high school championship with Shohei High School and a Japan under-22 call-up. Whether they can establish a reference point with hold-up play and aerial duels will shape the night.
- The midfield sees Mito's technicians against Gamba's runners. Tasuku Funabashi, 24, spent eight years in the Kashima academy and is known for passing accuracy and reading the game for interceptions. Around him, 164cm Taishi Semba, 26, a Sanfrecce Hiroshima academy graduate, and Yoshiki Toriumi, 28, who scored nine goals in 33 J2 matches for Ventforet Kofu in 2025, work in tight spaces. Gamba respond with left-footed Rin Bito, 24, out of Kwansei Gakuin University, and Shuto Abe, 28, who spent two seasons in the Belgian top flight with RWD Molenbeek.
- Mito's back four blends youth with experience. In the centre are 33-year-old Yasuo Kimoto, 183cm, who has played J1 football with FC Tokyo, Sagan Tosu, Nagoya Grampus and Cerezo Osaka, and Kenta Itakura, 24, a national high school champion with Yamanashi Gakuin. On the flanks, Omori, 26, a natural centre-back with a high-quality left foot who also takes set pieces, and Takumi Manase, 28, a right-back with 181 appearances, seven goals and 18 assists for Vegalta Sendai, offer attacking output.
- Gamba also have repairs to make after shipping three goals in the opener. Shinnosuke Nakatani, 30, joined in 2023 from Nagoya Grampus after coming through the Kashiwa Reysol academy and earned a Best XI place in his first season, and he partners 22-year-old Ginjiro Iketani, who was named MVP of the Kanto university league at Tsukuba and helped his side win the national collegiate title. At left-back, Ryo Hatsuse, 29, brings a J1 title won with Vissel Kobe, a spell at Sheffield Wednesday and the ability to use both feet.
- The goalkeeping matchup is generational. Gamba go with Rui Araki, 18, an academy product who signed professional terms at 17 and starred at the 2026 AFC U-23 Asian Cup, where he was first choice as his country retained the title and was named the tournament's best goalkeeper. Mito counter with Konosuke Nishikawa, 23, who made 34 J2 appearances as Oita Trinita's first-choice keeper and is comfortable enough with the ball at his feet to start attacks from the back.
- Mito's bench offers a range of creators. Brazilian right winger Mateus Leiria, 31, has played in Denmark, Greece and Albania, won a monthly MVP award in J3 with Kataller Toyama and made 31 J2 appearances for Ventforet Kofu. Chihiro Kato, 27, was a regular at Vegalta Sendai and Montedio Yamagata, Yamamoto, 23, can play on either flank after arriving from Senshu University, and Keisuke Tada, 23, is a local product from Hitachi who topped the Kanto second division scoring charts in his final university year.
- Gamba's substitutes bring an international flavour. Deniz Hummet, 29, is a 189cm centre-forward born in Sweden with Turkey international experience, raised in the Malmo FF academy and later of Elfsborg and Caykur Rizespor, offering hold-up play and aerial threat. Eli Adams, 24, arrived from Australia via Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar, while Shogo Sasaki, 26, a left-footed centre-back from the Kashima academy, provides long-range distribution from the back.
