Match Preview
- Matchday 2 pairs two teams whose openings could hardly have differed more. Urawa sit 15th on zero points after losing 4-3 away at Gamba Osaka despite scoring three themselves, while Sanfrecce Hiroshima are fifth on three points thanks to a 3-0 home win over JEF United Chiba. Kashiwa Reysol lead the table on six points.
- The shape battle is Urawa's 4-3-3 against Hiroshima's 3-4-2-1. Toshiki Higashi (LWB, 26), an academy graduate with youth caps from U-15 to U-23 and the side's set-piece taker, stretches one flank while natural centre-back Narito Nakano (26) covers the other, with shadow strikers Akito Suzuki and Rikuji Kato attacking the inside channels. Urawa's counter is left-footed Takuro Kaneko (RW, 29) cutting in from the right.
- The midfield contrast is stark. Hiroshima pair Shun Kawabe (CM, 30), who has played in four European countries with Standard Liege, Wolverhampton and Grasshopper and debuted for Japan in 2021, with 20-year-old Yotaro Nakashima (CDM), who signed the fastest professional deal in club history at 17. Urawa reply with ball-winner Kaito Yasui (CM, 26, past 100 J1 appearances), utility man Ryoma Watanabe (CAM, 29) and Shuta Sasa, signed from Imabari.
- Hiroshima's focal point is 190cm former Ivory Coast international Sebastien Haller (ST, 32), who scored in seven consecutive Champions League matches with Ajax and also served West Ham and Borussia Dortmund. Urawa's answer at centre-back is Danilo Boza (28), schooled at Vasco da Gama and Santos, alongside Kota Kudo (23), back at Urawa in June 2026 after development loans at Fagiano Okayama, Giravanz Kitakyushu and Fujieda MYFC.
- Both goalmouths carry a story. Urawa's 40-year-old Shusaku Nishikawa faces one of his former clubs: he came through Oita and Hiroshima before moving to Saitama, and his 600-plus J1 appearances and precise left-footed distribution make him a build-up outlet. Hiroshima, meanwhile, leave 2024 J1 Best XI keeper Keisuke Osako on the bench and start Issei Ouchi (25), who earned his stripes in J3 with Matsumoto Yamaga among others.
- There is more reunion subtext. Urawa's Yoichi Naganuma (29, RM) wore Hiroshima purple before spells at Sagan Tosu and Montedio Yamagata, and lines up in the home back four here. Travelling in the opposite direction is Taishi Matsumoto (CM, 27), who spent a year at Urawa before returning to Hiroshima and was part of Japan's 2019 Copa America squad; he starts among the substitutes.
- Urawa's front line is led by Ado Onaiwu (CF, 30), who scored in each of his first three Japan caps and brings European mileage from Toulouse, Auxerre and 1. FC Magdeburg, giving the hosts an aerial reference point. Beside him is 22-year-old Minamino, a left-footed Gamba Osaka academy product who scored 10 goals in J3 with Tegevajaro Miyazaki and specialises in shots from nowhere.
- Experience defines Hiroshima's back three. Captain Sho Sasaki, signed from Ventforet Kofu, was named in the 2024 J1 Best XI as a left-sided centre-back; 186cm Hayato Araki (30) captained Kansai University before turning professional; and 37-year-old Tsukasa Shiotani adds his years at Al Ain in the UAE, Japan caps at the 2015 and 2019 Asian Cups, and a fierce long-range shot.
- Both benches hold intriguing options. Urawa can turn to Junpei Hayakawa (20, 163cm, CAM), the youngest ever winner of the Levain Cup New Hero award at 17, and Hiyu Komori, who once swept J2's scoring title, MVP and Best XI in a single season. Hiroshima have academy No. 10 Shimon Kobayashi (AM), promoted to the senior squad for 2026, plus Naoto Arai (RB, 29), who managed a hat-trick in his first season at the club.
