Match Preview
- Vissel Kobe arrive on the back of a 1-0 away win at Avispa Fukuoka that left them seventh with three points and a clean sheet. FC Tokyo, by contrast, sit rock bottom in 20th after a 5-1 home battering by Machida Zelvia that saddled them with a league-worst goal difference of -4. Kashiwa Reysol have already moved to six points at the top.
- The biggest subplot is a four-way set of reunions. Kobe's Yoshinori Muto (CF, 34) came through FC Tokyo before moving to Mainz, and remains the first Japanese player to score in the Bundesliga, the Premier League and La Liga; he was named J.League MVP in 2024. Also facing his former club is goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda (37), another FC Tokyo alumnus who kept goal for Japan at the 2022 World Cup.
- The traffic runs both ways. FC Tokyo's Kento Hashimoto (CDM, 32) left the capital for Rostov, Huesca and Eibar, spent time at Vissel Kobe and has since returned to Tokyo. Behind him stands Kim Seung-Gyu (35), a South Korea international with more than 80 caps whose career has also taken in Kashiwa Reysol, Ulsan Hyundai and, crucially for tonight, Vissel Kobe.
- Kobe's spearhead is 36-year-old Yuya Osako, the Werder Bremen and 1. FC Koln forward whose winner against Colombia at the 2018 World Cup remains a landmark for Japanese football. He is up against an experienced FC Tokyo pairing: Masato Morishige (39), a five-time J.League Best XI selection, and 189cm Dane Alexander Scholz (33), who earned Best XI honours during his Urawa Reds years.
- In midfield it is Kobe's three against Tokyo's double pivot. Yosuke Ideguchi (CM, 29), scorer of the winner against Australia in World Cup qualifying and a former Celtic player, is joined by Yuya Kuwasaki (CDM, 28), signed from V-Varen Nagasaki, and Aomori Yamada graduate Yuta Goke (CAM, 27), once captain of Vegalta Sendai. Tokyo lean on Takahiro Ko (CDM, 28), formerly of Albirex Niigata and Gamba Osaka.
- FC Tokyo pair height with pace up front. Marcelo Ryan (ST, 24) stands 188cm and has scored 14 J1 goals across spells at Sagan Tosu and Yokohama FC, while strike partner Motoki Nagakura (CF, 26) climbed from amateur football to the top flight and won the Levain Cup scoring title. Kobe's answer is Flamengo-schooled Matheus Thuler (27) alongside 186cm Tetsushi Yamakawa (28), the club's captain since 2025.
- The flank duels should be lively. Tokyo field 164cm dribbler Shion Homma (LW, 26), an Albirex Niigata academy product with European experience at Club Brugge, against Kobe right-back Gotoku Sakai (35), the first Japanese player to captain a Bundesliga side. On the opposite side, Kein Sato (RW, 25) brings the directness he developed at Werder Bremen and at the Paris Olympics.
- Kobe's team sheet has an unusual wrinkle. Katsuya Nagato (31) starts in the front line despite being a left-back by trade, a player whose left-footed crossing and set pieces helped Yokohama F. Marinos to the title and earned him consecutive J.League Outstanding Player awards. In defence sits Brazilian Diego (30), naturally a central midfielder, whose years at Kashiwa Reysol and Sagan Tosu inform his left-footed distribution.
- Both benches carry match-winners. Kobe can introduce 183cm Ren Komatsu (CF, 27), once a J3 top scorer with a formidable aerial game, Haruya Ide (CAM, 32), who opened the scoring in the match that clinched the club's first J1 title in 2023, and 19-year-old academy technician Kento Hamasaki (164cm). Tokyo hold back Teruhito Nakagawa (RW, 34), the 160cm winger who took the 2019 J1 scoring title and MVP award, plus free-kick specialist and Paris Olympian Fuki Yamada (25).
