Match Preview
- Okayama arrive in 10th place on three points from two games, one win and one defeat with a level goal difference, while Tokyo Verdy sit 17th on a single point at minus two. Kashiwa Reysol have already pulled clear at the top with nine points from three matches, and with four clubs tied on three points, Verdy are chasing their first win of the season and the hosts a second straight home victory.
- The two sides arrive in contrasting shape. Okayama lost their opener away at Cerezo Osaka before steadying themselves with a 1-0 clean sheet at home to V-varen Nagasaki. Verdy have played both matches at home, drawing 1-1 with Kawasaki Frontale and then losing 1-3 to leaders Kashiwa Reysol, conceding four goals in the process. This is their first road trip of the campaign.
- Both teams set up in a 3-4-2-1, so the double pivot battle in the middle should dictate the rhythm. Okayama pair Oberdan (31, CM), a K League Best XI selection in both 2023 and 2024 with Pohang Steelers before joining this year, with Eiji Miyamoto (28, CDM), a high-mileage ball-winner who arrived from Albirex Niigata. Verdy counter with 185cm Joi Yamamoto (20, CDM), a 2023 U-17 World Cup player, alongside the technical Rei Hirakawa (26, AM) of FC Tokyo academy pedigree.
- The headline duel is Lucao against Verdy's back three. The 191cm two-footed Brazilian centre-forward, a fixture since arriving in 2023 after spells at Kagoshima United, Zweigen Kanazawa and Matsumoto Yamaga, will be met by the 186cm, 85kg Ryuta Inoue (26, CB) and Naoki Hayashi (28, CB), who wore Kashima Antlers' storied number 23. Behind them stands Mateus (33, 189cm), a Corinthians academy product who played all 42 J2 matches in 2023.
- Okayama's two shadow strikers carry genuine quality. Jin Esaka (34, CAM) is a former Japan international and a J.League Best XI pick during his Kashiwa Reysol days who shoots and passes with either foot, while Sangho Na (30, LW) has 30 caps for South Korea and a 2018 Asian Games gold medal. When the right-footed Na cuts inside from the left he will meet Kazuya Miyahara (30), a canny one-on-one defender schooled at Nagoya Grampus and Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
- The wide slots in the two four-man midfield bands are just as intriguing. Okayama field 166cm Kosuke Shirai (32, RB), a relentless runner who was a regular at Consadole Sapporo, Kyoto Sanga and FC Tokyo, on the right, with Towa Yamane (27, 167cm, LM), a 30-game J1 performer last season, on the left. Verdy answer with left-footed Shuhei Mizoguchi (22, LB) from Kashima's academy and Yosuke Uchida (24, RB), a national high school championship runner-up with Aomori Yamada.
- Okayama's bench carries a subplot: Yuta Kamiya (29, CAM) came through Tokyo Verdy's youth ranks before Aomori Yamada High School, and the playmaker who has since taken in Shonan, Kashiwa, Shimizu and Gangwon FC in Korea could face the club that raised him. Beside him sit Jun Nishikawa, the left-footed winger nicknamed the genius lefty, and Kazunari Ichimi (28, CF), a scorer in the 2024 J1 promotion play-off final.
- Verdy's strength is their homegrown depth. Yamamoto starts, while the bench holds Yuan Matsuhashi (24, LM), at the club since elementary school, and academy graduate Ryosuke Shirai (21, CF, 183cm). Add the 166cm dribbler Yuta Arai (23), who came via Maebashi Ikuei and Toyo University, and Soma Meshino (25, CM), who spent the first half of 2026 on loan at Tochigi SC, and there are genuine game-changers in reserve.
- The goalkeeping matchup pits two very different journeys. Okayama's Renato Moser (26, Germany) is a 196cm left-hander from Union Berlin's academy whose career has taken in Cercle Brugge, Austria Klagenfurt and Kolding IF in Denmark, while Mateus was central to Verdy's first promotion to J1 in 16 years. Okayama's back-up Shun Matsuda is another 196cm presence, a former captain at Aomori Yamada High School.
