Match Preview
- Bottom-three Nagoya Grampus host fifth-placed Gamba Osaka in a fixture of contrasting starts. Nagoya are 18th with zero points from two matches, having scored once and conceded three, while Gamba have a win and a draw for four points and a goal difference of plus one. Leaders Kashiwa Reysol sit on nine points from three games - nine clear of Nagoya, five clear of Gamba - so the hosts badly need their first points of the campaign.
- The performances so far tell the story. Nagoya lost 1-0 at home to Shimizu S-Pulse on the opening day and then 2-1 away at Kashima, managing just a single goal in the process. Gamba, by contrast, won a 4-3 thriller at home against Urawa Reds before being pegged back to a 1-1 draw away at Mito Hollyhock - five goals scored in two outings, but four conceded, a profile that suggests an open game.
- Shinnosuke Nakatani provides the sharpest subplot. The 30-year-old centre-back, a Kashiwa Reysol academy graduate, spent years at Nagoya Grampus before joining Gamba in 2023 and being named in the J.League Best XI in his first season. Physically imposing and comfortable playing through pressure with sharp vertical passes, he now anchors the visiting defence against his former club.
- The reunion runs both ways. Nagoya's bench includes Yodai Sato (27), a 183cm centre-back who previously played for Gamba Osaka and also gathered experience at Urawa Reds and Vegalta Sendai. Strong in the air with a nose for set-piece goals and a reputation for reading play early, he is an obvious option should the hosts need to change the shape of the game.
- Nagoya's 3-4-2-1 features an unusual back line. Sho Inagaki, a 34-year-old holding midfielder by trade who covers more than 11km per match and made his Japan debut at 29, occupies the central defensive slot. Yuhei Tokumoto (30) brings left-footed crossing and dead-ball quality on the left after spells with FC Tokyo and Fagiano Okayama, while Kiki Hara (28), a right-back who can also fill in at centre-back or in midfield after playing for Grasshopper in Switzerland, takes the right.
- Gamba lead the line with 189cm Deniz Hummet. Born in Sweden and capped by Turkey, the 29-year-old came through the Malmo FF academy and has played for Elfsborg, Troyes AC and Rizespor, building a game around hold-up play and aerial dominance. Nagoya's improvised back three will need a clear plan for dealing with his physical presence.
- Nagoya are not short of attacking names either. Yuya Yamagishi (32, 183cm) leads the line, a versatile forward who helped Avispa Fukuoka win the League Cup and who likes dropping deep to link play. In the two support slots are Yudai Kimura (25, 184cm), who wore number 10 and hit double figures for Tokyo Verdy, and Takuya Uchida (28), an FC Tokyo academy product comfortable in several roles. Tsukasa Morishima, whose through balls were a feature of his Sanfrecce Hiroshima days, adds creativity in midfield.
- Gamba's attacking midfield trio is built on one-v-one ability. Ryotaro Meshino (28, 171cm), once dubbed the 'Naniwa Messi', graduated from the Gamba academy, moved to Manchester City and played for Hearts in Scotland and Rio Ave in Portugal before returning in 2022. Ryoya Yamashita (28) is only 164cm but an explosive sprinter on the right, while Asahi Uenaka - a double-figure scorer in his second season out of high school at V-varen Nagasaki, an AFC Champions League finalist with Yokohama F. Marinos and a Paris Olympian - operates centrally.
- The midfield battle should be fierce. Tomoki Takamine (28) is Nagoya's ball-winner, a left-footed holder with a fierce shot from range who played abroad with KV Kortrijk and scored ten goals in J2 in 2025 on the way to a Best XI selection. Gamba pair Rin Bito (24), a left-footed 180cm graduate of Kwansei Gakuin University known for his duels and work rate, with Shuto Abe (28), who came through FC Tokyo and spent two seasons in Belgium's top flight with RWD Molenbeek.
- Both goalkeepers are remarkably young. Nagoya's Alex Pisano is 20 and stands 195cm, an academy graduate whose reach and command of crosses stand out and who has been called into a Japan U-17 World Cup squad. Gamba's Rui Araki is just 18, having signed professional terms at 17 after coming through the club's youth system, and he was named best goalkeeper as his side retained the AFC U-23 Asian Cup in 2026.
- The benches could decide it late on. Gamba can call on Takashi Usami (34), the academy prodigy who went on to play for Bayern Munich, club stalwart Akira Kurata (37), part of the 2014 treble-winning side, and 20-year-old Gaku Nawata, MVP of the national high-school championship and both MVP and top scorer at the AFC U-17 Asian Cup. Nagoya reply with Mateus Castro (31), the left-footed Brazilian winger who returned to the club in 2025, 37-year-old London Olympic scorer Kensuke Nagai, and the pacy Yuya Asano (29).
