Match Preview
- An unbeaten side travels to Osaka. Sanfrecce Hiroshima sit fourth on seven points from three games, two wins and a draw, with a goal difference of plus six that keeps leaders Machida Zelvia (nine points) within reach. Gamba Osaka are tenth on four points after a win, a draw and a defeat, and need a home result to close the three-point gap.
- The numbers reveal a stark contrast in defence. Hiroshima have conceded only twice in three matches, beating JEF United Chiba 3-0, winning 4-1 away at Urawa and drawing 1-1 at home with Kawasaki Frontale. Gamba have been involved in shootouts, scoring six and conceding seven: a 4-3 opening-day win over Urawa, a 1-1 stalemate at Mito and a 3-1 defeat away to Nagoya Grampus.
- Hiroshima's number ten Akito Suzuki returns to the club that first taught him. The 23-year-old striker came through Gamba Osaka's junior youth set-up before finishing as top scorer at the national high school tournament and moving on via Shonan Bellmare. Sharp in behind and diligent in the press, he will be tracked by Shinnosuke Nakatani, the 30-year-old centre-back named in the Best XI in his first season at Gamba.
- Sebastien Haller leads the Hiroshima line. The 190cm former Ivory Coast international played for West Ham, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund, and set a record by scoring in seven consecutive Champions League matches during his Ajax days. Now 32 and back playing after beating serious illness, his aerial presence will be measured against 182cm Nakatani and left-footed 26-year-old Shogo Sasaki.
- Gamba answer with height and experience in a 4-2-3-1. Deniz Hümmet, a 189cm centre forward of 29 with Turkey caps, spearheads the attack behind a band of three: Ryotaro Meshino, 28, who once moved from the Gamba academy to Manchester City; Issam Jebali, the 34-year-old Tunisia international who was voted player of the month in Denmark; and 164cm sprinter Ryoya Yamashita on the right.
- Hiroshima hold the edge in central midfield. Hayao Kawabe, 30, has played in four European countries and combines close control under pressure with well-timed runs from deep, alongside 20-year-old Yotaro Nakajima, who signed the fastest professional contract in club history at 17. Gamba counter with Tokuma Suzuki, 29, a destroyer who captained Maebashi Ikuei to a national final, and 37-year-old club icon Shu Kurata in the number ten shirt.
- The flanks promise a fine duel. Hiroshima's left wing-back Shunki Higashi, 26 and an academy graduate, delivers the set pieces with his precise left foot, while right-sided Naoto Arai, 29, once scored a hat-trick from defence in his first season at the club. Gamba respond with Ryo Hatsuse, a 29-year-old left-back genuinely two-footed after years of training his weaker side, and the quick, crossing full-back Takeru Kishimoto.
- Both benches hide decorated goalkeepers. Gamba start 35-year-old Jun Ichimori, who climbed from J3 and J2 after leaving the Cerezo academy, with 40-year-old treble winner Masaaki Higashiguchi behind him. Hiroshima go with 25-year-old Issei Ouchi, born in Italy and capped by Japan from U-15 to U-17, leaving 2024 J.League Best XI selection Keisuke Osako among the substitutes.
- Game-changers wait on both sides. Gamba can call on 20-year-old Gaku Nawata, the MVP of the national high school championship who also won MVP and the Golden Boot at the AFC U-17 Asian Cup. Hiroshima have Taishi Matsumoto, the 28-year-old midfielder from the 2019 Copa America squad who returned after a year at Urawa, plus Takumu Kawamura, 27, who spent time with Red Bull Salzburg.
