Match Preview
- Vissel Kobe, eighth on four points, host Cerezo Osaka, who sit sixth on six. Kobe have won once, drawn once and lost once with three scored and three conceded, while Cerezo have two wins and a defeat with a goal difference of -1. Four clubs are packed into the two points separating them, and leaders Machida Zelvia are already on nine.
- There is a shared measuring stick: both sides have travelled to Avispa Fukuoka. Kobe won 1-0 there on the opening weekend, while Cerezo were beaten 3-0 at the same venue on matchday two. That gap in outcomes against a common opponent frames the question of who controls the rhythm here.
- Kobe drew 2-2 at home with FC Tokyo on matchday two, then lost 1-0 away at Yokohama F. Marinos on matchday three. Their goals for and against are level at three apiece after three games, but three goals scored is modest output for a side with these attacking names.
- Cerezo's six points have come entirely at home: 2-1 against Fagiano Okayama on the opening day and 1-0 over Shimizu S-Pulse in the last round, both settled by a single goal. With only three goals scored in three matches, winning tight, low-scoring games has become their signature so far.
- Kobe's 4-3-3 is fronted by Ren Komatsu, the 27-year-old striker who won the J3 golden boot and finished high in the J2 charts, generating goals through his leap despite standing 183cm and through a fierce left foot. Flanking him are two natural full-backs: Katsuya Nagato, 31, a league winner with Yokohama F. Marinos and a two-time J.League Outstanding Player award recipient known for left-footed crosses and long throws, and Nanasei Iino, 29, who worked his way up via Sagan Tosu.
- Kobe's midfield three is full of character. Yosuke Ideguchi, 30, moved from Gamba Osaka to Celtic and scored the decisive goal against Australia in World Cup qualifying, pairing ball-winning with a heavy shot from range. Brazilian Diego, 30 and 183cm, distributes on a precise left foot after years at Kashiwa Reysol and Sagan Tosu. Yuta Goke, 27, captained Vegalta Sendai and twice finished as their top scorer before returning to Kobe, and 20-year-old Yuan Iwamoto starts while still enrolled at Chukyo University as a designated player.
- Cerezo answer with height and international mileage in their bank of four. Shunta Tanaka, 29 and 183cm, anchors the midfield and has played as a defender at Consadole Sapporo, making him comfortable starting attacks from deep. Beside him, Jackson Irvine, 33 and 187cm, has 81 caps and 14 goals for Australia, appeared at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and captained St. Pauli. On the flanks are Ayumu Ohata, 25, an AFC Champions League winner with Urawa and Paris Olympian, and Takumi Nakamura, 25, schooled at FC Tokyo and Yokohama FC.
- The aerial battle should be central. Cerezo's lone striker Solomon Sakuragawa stands 190cm and weighs 91kg at 25, a JEF United academy product who sharpened his finishing at Fagiano Okayama and Yokohama FC. Kobe's centre-backs are Mateus Tourel, the 27-year-old, 186cm Brazilian who came through Flamengo's youth ranks alongside Vinicius Junior, and Satoshi Yamakawa, 28 and 186cm, appointed club captain in 2025. At right-back stands Gotoku Sakai, 35, the first Japanese player to captain a Bundesliga side at Hamburger SV.
- Cerezo's bench carries serious weight. Shinji Kagawa, 37, the former Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United attacking midfielder, still offers close control in tight areas and an instinct for arriving in the box. Lucas Fernandes, the 32-year-old Brazilian winger who won back-to-back J.League assist titles, and Thiago Andrade, 25, a left-sided attacker with New York City FC on his CV, give the visitors plenty of ways to unlock a game.
- Both goalkeepers have World Cup pedigree. Kobe's Daiya Maekawa, 31 and 191cm, sweeps behind a high line and helped the club to the 2023 J1 title after earning a Japan call-up. Cerezo's Kosuke Nakamura, 31 and 185cm, was in Japan's squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and later played in Portugal with Portimonense. Kobe also have 37-year-old Shuichi Gonda, a participant at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, waiting on the bench.
