Match Preview
- JEF United Chiba host Fagiano Okayama still searching for their first point of the season. Four matches, four defeats, two goals scored and 13 conceded leaves them 20th with a league-worst -11 goal difference, four points behind 13th-placed Okayama. With leaders Kashiwa Reysol already on 12 points, Chiba badly need this to be the night the run ends.
- Chiba's opening month was brutal: 0-3 away at Sanfrecce Hiroshima, 0-4 at home to Machida Zelvia and 0-2 at FC Tokyo, three straight blanks. They finally scored in round four, taking two goals off Kawasaki Frontale, but still lost 4-2. The form line reads L-L-L-L. Three of those four fixtures were on the road, so the schedule at least turns in their favour from here.
- Okayama have one win, one draw and two defeats for four points, with three goals scored and only four conceded. They beat V-varen Nagasaki 1-0 at home in round two and drew 0-0 with Tokyo Verdy in round three, then lost 2-1 at Cerezo Osaka and 2-1 at Nagoya Grampus - both by a single goal. Four goals conceded in four games is among the best defensive records in the division.
- Another mirror match, with both sides in a 3-4-2-1. Chiba lead with Brazilian striker Erison, 180cm and 84kg, who once top-scored for Botafogo with 15 goals in a Serie A season, supported by Daichi Ishikawa, who managed a career-best 10 J2 goals at Roasso Kumamoto, and the 168cm Ken Yamura. Okayama's shadow pair is Na Sang-ho, a 30-cap South Korea international and 2018 Asian Games gold medallist, alongside 23-year-old Kota Kawano, who made his J.League debut at 16 for Renofa Yamaguchi.
- The deep midfield pairings should set the tempo. Chiba use 171cm holding midfielder Hinata Kida, a Cerezo Osaka academy product, next to the 182cm Matheus Indio, who has played in Portugal with Vitoria de Guimaraes and in Brazil with Atletico Goianiense. Okayama counter with Oberdan, named in the K League Best XI in both 2023 and 2024 while at Pohang Steelers and who calls himself a connector, and Eiji Miyamoto, who came up through Iwaki FC and Albirex Niigata.
- Okayama again use natural centre-back Haruka Motoyama in the four-man midfield band. A Vissel Kobe academy graduate, Motoyama scored in both the semi-final and the final of the 2024 promotion play-offs to send Okayama into J1 for the first time. Chiba do something similar with Takumi Tsukui, a second-striker type who became the first Yokohama F. Marinos youth player to sign a professional contract while still in the academy.
- There is real height at the back. Okayama build around the 191cm Yugo Tatsuta, who made his senior Japan debut in 2019, and 23-year-old Hiroshi Omori at 188cm, a Tokushima academy product with J3 experience at Fukushima and Tochigi, with 19-year-old Japan U-20 international Soichiro Mori bombing forward on the right. Chiba answer with the 186cm Takashi Kawano, a three-season regular at Blaublitz Akita, Australian defender Daniel Hall and 32-year-old Takahiro Iida, previously a first-choice at Shimizu S-Pulse and Kyoto Sanga.
- Both goalkeepers are foreign imports, an unusual sight in J1. Chiba start Spaniard Jose Aurelio Suarez, a Barcelona cantera graduate with more than 90 J2 appearances for Tokushima Vortis. Okayama field Lennart Moser, a 196cm left-footed German raised in Union Berlin's academy with spells in Belgium, Austria and Denmark. The gap between 13 goals conceded and four tells its own story about the composure behind each side.
- The benches are stacked with experience. Chiba can call on 35-year-old Taishi Taguchi, who spent nine seasons at Nagoya Grampus and has been likened to Xavi, plus 38-year-old Koki Yonekura, a domestic treble winner with Gamba Osaka and a JEF academy graduate, and winger Naoki Tsubaki, who once tried his luck at Melbourne City. Okayama hold back two-footed former Japan international Ataru Esaka, 34, a J.League Best XI pick during his Kashiwa days who returned from Ulsan in Korea, and the 166cm speedster Kosuke Shirai at right-back.
