Match Preview
- Yokohama F. Marinos sit ninth on six points from four games (2-0-2, seven scored and seven conceded for a goal difference of zero), while Kyoto Sanga are 14th on four points (1-1-2, minus two). Leaders Kashiwa Reysol are already out on 12 points, but everything from fifth-placed FC Tokyo on seven down to Kyoto on four is separated by just three points. With only two points between these two, matchday five can reshuffle the early-season pecking order.
- Neither side has strung anything together yet. Yokohama beat Vissel Kobe 1-0 at home on matchday three and then lost 3-2 away at Urawa, leaving them on an L-W-W-L sequence. Kyoto were pulled apart 3-1 at home by Mito Hollyhock before edging Avispa Fukuoka 2-1 on matchday four for their first win of the campaign, and the question is whether that relief travels.
- This is a 4-2-3-1 mirror match, so the double-pivot battle sets the tone. Yokohama pair Kei Chinen, the 31-year-old converted forward turned CDM who won J1's duels crown after spells at Kashima Antlers, Kawasaki Frontale and Oita Trinita, with 22-year-old Kosuke Matsumura, still enrolled at Hosei University and playing on a special designated-player registration. Kyoto answer with the 185cm Joao Pedro, 26, signed from Brazilian top-flight side EC Vitoria and used as the side's engine for both his physical duelling and his passing range.
- Yokohama's No.10 role goes to 35-year-old Jun Amano, an academy graduate once labelled the heir to Shunsuke Nakamura for the precision of his left-footed free kicks and through balls. His career has taken in Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Ulsan Hyundai and Belgium's Sporting Lokeren, and how much of the space in front of Kyoto's back line he is allowed will depend on whether Joao Pedro can screen it.
- Kyoto lead the line with Rafael Elias, the 27-year-old Brazilian whose fierce left-footed shooting and instinct in the box brought 10 goals in his first 10 J1 appearances, matching the league's fastest-ever mark, and who has become the club's all-time leading J.League scorer. Waiting for him are Jason Quinones, the 29-year-old Colombian centre-back at 187cm and 86kg, and left-footed Ryotaro Kakuta, 27 and 184cm, whose detour through Cardiff City and KV Kortrijk sharpened his long-range distribution. Elias came out of futsal and turns brilliantly in tight areas; both defenders want to meet him with height and contact.
- Two left-backs on the Kyoto bench know this stadium's occupants intimately. Ryosuke Yamanaka, 33, made his name as an attacking full-back at Yokohama F. Marinos, earned a Japan call-up there and has since passed through Urawa Reds, Cerezo Osaka, Nagoya Grampus and Kashiwa Reysol, arriving back to face his former club. Ren Kato, 26, also came through Yokohama and Tokyo Verdy before joining Kyoto, bringing aggressive overlapping runs and accurate crossing.
- The age spread in Yokohama's starting XI is remarkable. In goal is 40-year-old Daiki Iikura, an academy product with more than 16 years at the club who returned home after three and a half seasons at Vissel Kobe, while the attacking band includes 16-year-old Makoto Mishidera, who only signed his professional contract in April 2026. Centre-back Kosei Suwama, 23 and 186cm, is another junior-youth graduate, and the bench holds captain-since-2019 Takuya Kida plus academy-raised central midfielder Riku Yamane, 23.
- Sagan Tosu alumni are scattered across both camps. Kyoto field left winger Haruki Arai, 28, a sub-six-second 50m sprinter who played all 38 J2 matches in 2025 and made the league's best XI, right-back Hibiki Sato, 26 and just 168cm, and keep Fuchi Honda, a 25-year-old right winger who spent nine years in Tosu's academy and debuted at 17, in reserve. Yokohama's back line features 23-year-old centre-back Taisei Inoue, who played all 38 J2 games in his rookie season at Tosu, with Rio Nita, 23, another Tosu graduate who moved on to Austria, among the substitutes.
- The late-game options point in opposite directions. Kyoto hold back 192cm striker Shun Nagasawa, 38 and back at the club after 13 years away, whose heading and hold-up play are his calling cards, alongside the 192cm centre-back Hisashi Appiah Tawiah, 27, giving them a route to attack the box in the air. Yokohama counter with Belgian right winger Jordy Croux, 32 and vice-captain, whose left foot delivers his cut-ins and crosses, plus 33-year-old Ryo Miyaichi, once an Arsenal prospect and now a survivor of repeated serious knee injuries, offering pure pace.
- Yokohama's central striker is Kaina Tanimura, 28, a late developer who went from Kokushikan University to Iwaki FC and rediscovered his scoring touch after switching back from midfield to forward, all built on scrappy penalty-box instincts and relentless pressing from the front. Kyoto's answer in the middle is an old-and-new pairing: Yoshinori Suzuki, 33 and 184cm, a veteran of long service in the back lines of Oita Trinita and Shimizu S-Pulse, and 23-year-old Brazilian Weverton, schooled in the academies of Athletic Bilbao and Cruzeiro.
