Match Preview
- Okayama sit 10th on seven points from five matches with a level goal difference, while Sanfrecce Hiroshima are fourth on 11 points and still unbeaten at three wins and two draws. With Machida Zelvia already on 13 points at the top, Hiroshima need three points to keep pace; Okayama arrive off a 2-1 away win at bottom club JEF United Chiba in Round 5.
- Hiroshima have conceded just twice in five games. Their back three is anchored by 36-year-old captain Sho Sasaki, a 2024 J1 Best XI selection, alongside the 186cm Hayato Araki and the versatile Shuto Nakano, who can also fill in at wing-back or in midfield. Okayama, with only five goals scored all season, must find a way through that wall.
- This is a 3-4-2-1 mirror match, so the four-man midfield lines will decide the tempo. Hiroshima pair Shun Kawabe, a Japan international whose career has taken in Standard Liège, Wolverhampton and Grasshopper, with 20-year-old Yotaro Nakashima, who signed the fastest professional contract in club history at 17. Okayama respond with Oberdan, a two-time K League Best XI pick at Pohang Steelers, and 35-year-old Ibuki Fujita.
- Sébastien Haller leads the Hiroshima line. The 190cm former Ivory Coast international played for West Ham, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund, and once scored in seven consecutive Champions League matches for Ajax. Okayama counter with height of their own: 191cm former Japan international centre-back Yugo Tatsuta, the 188cm Hiroshi Omori, and 196cm left-footed German goalkeeper Renato Moser, a Union Berlin academy product.
- Okayama's two shadow strikers offer contrasting profiles. Tsukasa Esaka, 34, is a two-footed former Japan international who earned a J.League Best XI place at Kashiwa Reysol after spells at Omiya Ardija and Urawa Reds. Beside him is 23-year-old Kota Kono, who came through the Renofa Yamaguchi academy and made his J.League debut at 16, offering pace in behind.
- There is a reunion on the Okayama bench. Goalkeeper Goro Kawanami, 35, spent part of his career at Sanfrecce Hiroshima before this move. A Kashiwa Reysol academy graduate capped by Japan at youth level, the 192cm veteran was also first choice at Vegalta Sendai and Albirex Niigata, and now waits behind the starting Moser.
- Hiroshima's goalkeeping selection is worth watching. Italian-born Issei Ouchi, 25, starts ahead of Keisuke Osako, the 2024 J1 Best XI goalkeeper. Ouchi built his career in J3 with Matsumoto Yamaga, Kagoshima United and AC Nagano Parceiro, and was capped by Japan from U-15 through U-17 level, relying on quick reactions and clean positioning.
- The flanks should shape territory. Okayama use 32-year-old Kosuke Shirai in their four-man line, a 166cm runner whose speed and work rate carry him up and down the right. Hiroshima field left-footed set-piece specialist Toshiki Higashi and Naoto Arai, a full-back who managed a hat-trick in his first season at the club, in the wing-back roles.
- Bench strength could tilt the closing stages. Okayama hold Na Sang-ho, a South Korea international with 30 caps and a 2018 Asian Games gold medal, plus the technical attacking midfielder Yuta Kamiya. Hiroshima keep Taishi Matsumoto and Daiki Suga, both named in Japan's 2019 Copa América squad, along with former Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Takumu Kawamura.
- A shared measuring stick: both sides have already played bottom club JEF United Chiba. Hiroshima won 3-0 at home in Round 1, while Okayama edged a 2-1 away win in Round 5. Okayama also lost 2-1 at Nagoya Grampus in Round 4, the same Nagoya side Hiroshima brushed aside 3-0 at home a week later.
