Match Preview
- Second hosts third in a genuine title-race fixture. Vissel Kobe have 13 points from six games, winning four, drawing one and losing one, and their nine goals scored against four conceded make them the tightest side near the top. Kashima sit a point behind on 12, but with 13 scored and 11 conceded their games have been far more open. Both are chasing leaders Machida Zelvia on 16.
- Momentum favours the hosts. Kobe's D-L-W-W-W sequence ends in three straight wins: 1-0 at home to Cerezo Osaka, 2-0 away at Tokyo Verdy and 3-1 at home to V-Varen Nagasaki. Kashima started W-W-W, including a 2-1 home win over Nagoya Grampus and a 2-0 success at Tokyo Verdy, before stumbling to a 4-2 defeat at Mito Hollyhock and a 1-0 home loss to Urawa.
- Yuya Osako faces the club where his career began. The 36-year-old centre-forward came through at Kashima before spells at 1860 Munich, Cologne and Werder Bremen, and scored the winner against Colombia at the 2018 World Cup. His ability to hold the ball under heavy pressure remains the pivot of Kobe's attack, and how much time he can buy against his old club's back line will shape the game.
- Kobe's left-back Katsuya Nagato is another returnee, having previously worn Kashima colours. The 31-year-old delivers accurate left-footed crosses and set pieces and adds a long throw as a further weapon, and he won a league title at Yokohama F. Marinos and was named a J.League Outstanding Player in two successive seasons. Every dead ball he stands over pits 186cm Tetsushi Yamakawa against 186cm Naomichi Ueda in the air.
- The reunion runs both ways. Kashima right-back Rikuto Hirose spent time at Vissel Kobe, and the 30-year-old is a genuine utility man who can fill either flank, times his runs in behind well and presses from the front without complaint. His direct duel with Nagato down that side pairs two players who know each other's habits intimately.
- The midfields are built on different logic. Kobe pair Yosuke Ideguchi, the 30-year-old ball-winner who played for Celtic and scored the goal that sent Japan to the World Cup in a qualifier against Australia, with 35-year-old Gotoku Sakai, the first Japanese player to captain a Bundesliga club. Kashima line up Kento Misao, a 30-year-old with European experience at OH Leuven and Santa Clara, alongside 22-year-old Tsukui, a centre-back by trade pushed into the pivot.
- The centre-forward contrast is striking. Kashima start 19-year-old Homare Tokuda, a 186cm academy graduate who made his J1 debut while still in high school and belongs to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic generation, with captain-figure Yuma Suzuki, 30 and back from Sint-Truiden, playing off him. Kobe answer with Osako and Yoshinori Muto, 34, the first Japanese player to score in all three of Europe's biggest leagues and the 2024 J.League MVP.
- At the back, Kobe field Matheus Thuler, the 27-year-old 186cm Brazilian who came through Flamengo's academy alongside Vinicius Junior, next to Tetsushi Yamakawa, appointed club captain in 2025 and a dominant aerial presence at the same height. Kashima counter with Japan international Naomichi Ueda, 31, quick enough to cover 50 metres in 6.1 seconds, and left-footed Kim Tae-Hyeon, whose sharp passing makes him the visitors' build-up outlet.
- The goalkeeping duel is a showpiece in itself. Shuichi Gonda, 37, who played at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, organises Kobe's defence with constant coaching, while Tomoki Hayakawa, 27, arrives as the reigning J.League MVP and Best XI selection from 2025, combining fingertip reflexes from close range with the distribution to join the build-up. With both attacks capable of moments, the side that erases the fewer clear chances may decide it.
- Both benches carry weight. Kashima can call on Gaku Shibasaki, the 34-year-old playmaker who scored twice against Real Madrid in the 2016 Club World Cup final and spent seven seasons in Spain, plus Aleksandar Cavric, the 186cm Slovak who became the club's first European signing. Kobe hold back Brazilian winger Erik, 32, a former Yokohama F. Marinos man, and left-footed target man Ren Komatsu, 28, a former J3 top scorer strong in the air.
