Match Preview
- Nineteenth meets twentieth in a bottom-of-the-table showdown: Tokyo Verdy and JEF United Chiba are dead level on three points from six matches. Verdy have yet to win (0-3-3, goal difference minus six), while Chiba's single victory comes with a minus-10 differential. Avispa Fukuoka sit 18th on four points and leaders Machida Zelvia already have 17 from seven, so only three points here genuinely changes either side's outlook.
- Verdy's problem is stark: two goals in six league games. Their recent run reads L-D-L-L-D, with all three home outings lost — 1-3 to Kashiwa Reysol, 0-2 to Kashima and 0-2 to Vissel Kobe — while goalless draws away at Fagiano Okayama and Cerezo Osaka showed a side that can defend but not finish. Yuzuki Someno, the 25-year-old centre-forward who was top scorer at the national high school championship with Shoshi and later joined from Kashima, leads the line.
- Chiba arrive with a sliver of momentum. After four straight defeats — 0-4 at home to Machida, 0-2 away at FC Tokyo, 2-4 at Kawasaki Frontale and 1-2 at home to Okayama — they beat Gamba Osaka 2-0 at home in round six for their first win of the campaign. Fifteen goals conceded in six games remains the glaring weakness, but that clean sheet gives the back line something to build on.
- The shape clash is Verdy's 3-4-2-1 against Chiba's 4-4-2. A back three of Ryuta Inoue (186cm, 85kg, an aerial specialist), Naoki Hayashi (who wore Kashima's celebrated number 23) and Kaito Suzuki (a Paris-cycle Japan Under-23 international) must handle a mobile front pair of the 168cm Ken Yamura and Daichi Ishikawa, the 30-year-old who set a career high of 10 J2 goals at Roasso Kumamoto.
- Midfield control could decide it. Verdy's two shadow strikers, Rei Hirakawa — labelled a prodigy in FC Tokyo's academy and an Under-17 World Cup graduate — and Kosuke Saito, the 29-year-old attacking midfielder signed from Yokohama FC, will look to receive between the lines. Chiba counter with Yusuke Kobayashi, a 172cm ball-winner raised at Kashiwa Reysol who has anchored the side since joining in 2021, alongside Brazilian Mateus Indio, 27, a veteran of Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal and Atletico Goianiense at home.
- Both teams have genuine width. Verdy send Yuya Fukuda, 27, a Higashi Fukuoka product and former Gamba Osaka man, down the left with 166cm dribbler Yuta Arai, who arrived via Maebashi Ikuei and Toyo University and can change a game on his own. Chiba's answer is left-back Dai Hidaka, 31, whose left-footed crossing was honed at Honda FC and Iwaki FC, plus Rikuto Ishio, 25, a Vegalta Sendai signing with a long throw and the versatility to play centre-back.
- The goalkeeping duel pits two contrasting careers. Verdy's Mateus, 33 and 189cm, came through Corinthians' youth system and played all 42 J2 matches in 2023 as the club won promotion for the first time in 16 years. Chiba's Jose Aurelio Suarez is a Barcelona academy graduate who made more than 90 J2 appearances for Tokushima Vortis. Both are comfortable with the ball at their feet, which matters in a game likely to be decided by fine margins in build-up.
- There is a returning face on the Chiba bench: goalkeeper Ryodai Suzuki, 32, previously on Tokyo Verdy's books. At 192cm he commands crosses and has long been trusted as a shot-stopper, having come through Yokohama F. Marinos' academy before spells at Gamba Osaka and Chiba. He watches a former club from the sidelines as Suarez starts.
- Chiba probably hold the stronger bench in attack. Elison, the 27-year-old Brazilian centre-forward who joined from Kawasaki Frontale, once finished as Botafogo's leading scorer with 15 goals in a single Serie A season, and Hiroto Goya, 32, netted 22 in J2 for V-Varen Nagasaki to place third in the scoring charts. Verdy reply with the 182cm target man Kazunari Ichimi, 28, and 20-year-old Sohma Kanda, a Shizuoka Gakuen graduate who arrived from Kawasaki.
- Experience may settle the closing stages. Chiba can call on Taishi Taguchi, the 35-year-old holding midfielder who spent nine seasons at Nagoya Grampus, earned Japan caps and was once nicknamed the country's Xavi, plus 38-year-old right-back Tsunetaka Yonekura, a domestic treble winner with Gamba Osaka and a 2015 East Asian Cup call-up who came through Chiba's own academy. Verdy hold Kai Shibato, 30, in reserve, a combative defensive midfielder shaped by Urawa Reds and Machida Zelvia.
