Match Preview
- Avispa Fukuoka, 18th on four points from 1-1-5, host fourth-placed Sanfrecce Hiroshima, who have 14 points from 4-2-1. The gap is 10 points and the underlying numbers are starker still: Hiroshima have scored 19 and conceded six for a goal difference of +13, while Fukuoka sit on nine scored, 11 conceded and -2. Hiroshima are chasing leaders Machida Zelvia on 17 points; Fukuoka need a foothold to climb away from the bottom.
- Recent results run in opposite directions. Fukuoka lost 3-2 at Kashima, 2-1 at Kyoto Sanga and 3-2 at home to Urawa, drew 1-1 with Mito Hollyhock and fell 1-0 at Shimizu S-Pulse — five matches without a win. Hiroshima beat Nagoya Grampus 3-0 and thrashed Cerezo Osaka 6-1 at home, though they also slipped to a 3-2 defeat away at Fagiano Okayama in round six.
- The subplot of the night is Taishi Matsumoto, Hiroshima's 28-year-old box-to-box midfielder who previously played for Avispa Fukuoka. A Shohei High School graduate whose career has taken him through Hiroshima, Cerezo Osaka, Fukuoka and Urawa before this return, he was named in Japan's 2019 Copa America squad and drives the midfield with his running power and ball-winning.
- Both sides line up 3-4-2-1, so the shadow strikers set the rhythm. Fukuoka use 169cm dribbler Yuji Kitajima, an academy graduate who sharpened up on loan at Tokyo Verdy, alongside Masato Shigemi, a 24-year-old from Fukuoka University with a fine eye for a through ball. Hiroshima's Akito Suzuki, 23, arrived from Shonan Bellmare as a former high school championship top scorer, combining pace in behind with aggressive pressing.
- Hiroshima's striker is Shun Ayukawa, just 162cm but a genuine penalty-box poacher who won a Premier League Final title with Hiroshima's youth team and gained J2 mileage on loan at Oita Trinita. He faces a physically imposing Fukuoka back three of 185cm Masaya Tashiro, 33, 186cm Takumi Kamijima, 29, and left-footed 24-year-old Yuma Tsujioka. Mobility against height is the central mismatch.
- Hiroshima have conceded only six goals in seven matches. The line is led by 36-year-old captain Sho Sasaki, a 2024 J1 Best XI selection known for durability and defensive discipline, with 186cm Hayato Araki, a Japan international and Hiroshima youth product, alongside the versatile Shuto Nakano, comfortable at centre-back, wing-back or in midfield. Behind them stands Keisuke Osako, another academy graduate and a 2024 Best XI goalkeeper.
- Fukuoka answer with 24-year-old Yuma Obata, a 185cm goalkeeper from Vegalta Sendai's academy where he was first choice for a full season. His close-range shot-stopping and range will be examined by a Hiroshima attack that has scored 19 times in seven matches. On the bench sits 191cm local product Takumi Nagaishi, back since June after a loan spell at Tokushima Vortis in the first half of the year.
- The wing-back duel matters too. On Hiroshima's left, academy graduate Shunki Higashi, 26, takes free kicks and corners with his precise left foot. Naoto Arai, 29, patrols the right after spells at Albirex Niigata, Cerezo Osaka and Tokushima, and once scored a hat-trick from defence in his first season at Hiroshima. Fukuoka respond with Yota Maejima, six years in Yokohama FC's academy, and Kaoru Yamawaki, who made 36 appearances and scored three goals at Giravanz Kitakyushu.
- Fukuoka's bench carries surprising European pedigree. Oriol Romeu, 34, made 256 appearances between Barcelona, Chelsea and Southampton and collected Champions League and Europa League honours. Shintaro Nago, a 30-year-old attacking midfielder, played 36 J1 matches and scored five goals for Kashima Antlers in 2024, while 187cm academy forward Abdel Hanan Sani Brown — brother of Japan's national sprint record holder — offers height and raw speed late on.
- Hiroshima's options are equally deep. Daiki Suga, 28, is famed for the fierce left-footed strike nicknamed the 'Suga Cannon' and was in Japan's 2019 Copa America squad; Naoki Maeda, 31, has played for Nagoya Grampus, Yokohama F. Marinos and Utrecht in the Netherlands; Takumu Kawamura, 27, returned from Red Bull Salzburg. Add 18-year-old Shimon Kobayashi, the 161cm No. 10 of Hiroshima's youth side and a Japan U-17 international, and the away bench can change any game.
