Match Preview
- Eighth-placed Kashima Antlers (4-1-3, 13 points, +1 goal difference) host 16th-placed Gamba Osaka (1-3-4, six points, -6) in a meeting separated by seven points. Kashima trail leaders Vissel Kobe, on 19 points, by six and need a result to stay in touch with the top five. Gamba, meanwhile, sit just two points clear of bottom club JEF United Chiba on four.
- Kashima have managed a single point from their last four matches since beating Tokyo Verdy 2-0 away in round four. They lost 4-2 at Mito Hollyhock, 1-0 at home to Urawa and 2-1 at Vissel Kobe before drawing 3-3 at Kawasaki Frontale in round eight. Ten goals conceded across those five fixtures underline a back line that has not settled.
- Gamba have been shut out in three straight defeats: 2-0 away at JEF United Chiba, 2-0 at home to FC Tokyo and 1-0 at home to leaders Vissel Kobe. Eight goals in eight league matches explains a goal difference of -6 and a position of 16th. Creating clear-cut chances on the road in Ibaraki is the most pressing item on their list.
- Kashima hold the edge in midfield experience. Gaku Shibasaki, 34, spent seven seasons in Spain with Getafe, Deportivo La Coruna, Leganes and Tenerife and scored twice against Real Madrid in the 2016 Club World Cup final. Alongside him, holding midfielder Kento Misao, 30, honed his ball-winning at OH Leuven and Santa Clara. Gamba counter with left-footed Rin Bito, 24, a defensive midfielder out of Kwansei Gakuin University, and Shuto Abe, 28, who spent two seasons at RWD Molenbeek after coming through the FC Tokyo academy.
- Kashima's front pairing spans 13 years in age. Brazilian centre-forward Leo Ceara, 31, has reached double figures in five consecutive J.League seasons and finished as top scorer in 2025 as Kashima took the title. His partner Minami Yoshida, 18, became the club's youngest J1 debutant and arrived with an MVP award from the U-15 Club Youth Championship. Yuma Suzuki, 30, a former Sint-Truiden forward deployed in the midfield band, completes the attacking triangle.
- Gamba's support line features Takashi Usami, Welton Felipe and Ryoya Yamashita. Usami, 34, was the first player promoted early from the Gamba academy and went on to play for Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim, Augsburg and Dusseldorf. Welton, a two-footed Brazilian left winger signed from Levski Sofia, works the touchline rather than cutting inside every time. Yamashita, 28 and just 164cm, brings sprint power to the right after spells at Tokyo Verdy and Yokohama FC.
- The centre-back duels should be worth watching. Kashima pair Japan international Naomichi Ueda, 31 and 186cm, with Belgian and French experience at Cercle Brugge and Nimes, with left-footed Korean Kim Tae-hyeon, 26, also 186cm, formerly of Ulsan Hyundai and Sagan Tosu. Gamba answer with Shinnosuke Nakatani, 30, a Kashiwa Reysol academy product who made the Best XI in his first season after joining from Nagoya Grampus, and Shota Fukuoka, 30, who has passed 200 J.League appearances after rising through Shonan, Fukushima and Tochigi.
- There is a reunion on the Gamba bench. Shogo Sasaki, a 26-year-old left-footed centre-back, came through the Kashima Antlers academy before building his career at Iwate Grulla Morioka and JEF United Chiba. He is a build-up starter whose accurate left-footed long passing sets the tone, so a second-half introduction would put him up against the club that raised him.
- The goalkeeping matchup is a study in contrasts. Kashima's Yuki Hayakawa, 27 and 187cm, was named J.League MVP and selected in the Best XI in 2025, and is known for fingertip saves from close range. Gamba's Jun Ichimori, 35, came through the Cerezo Osaka academy and worked his way up via Renofa Yamaguchi and Fagiano Okayama, organising his line with sharp reading of the game and constant communication.
- Both benches carry different kinds of attacking threat. Kashima can call on Aleksandar Cavric, the 32-year-old 186cm Slovakian winger who arrived via Slovan Bratislava and Genk, plus Elber, 34, the left winger who helped Yokohama F. Marinos to the 2022 title. Gamba hold back Tunisia forward Issam Jebali, 34, a former Danish Superliga player of the month, 189cm Turkey striker Deniz Hummet, 30, and Ryotaro Meshino, 28, the ex-Manchester City dribbler once nicknamed the Messi of Naniwa.
