Match Preview
- Fukuoka arrive bottom-half and desperate: 18th on four points from eight matches with a single win, one draw and six defeats, their -3 goal difference the only thing keeping them above Tokyo Verdy (-8) and JEF United Chiba (-11), who are also on four. Their last five have brought a 1-2 loss at Kyoto, a 2-3 home defeat to Urawa and a 0-1 reverse against Hiroshima, with a 1-1 draw against Mito the lone point.
- Okayama sit ninth on 13 points with four wins, a draw and three losses, and a goal difference of +1. They strung together three straight victories, winning 2-1 away at Chiba, beating Hiroshima 3-2 at home and taking all three points at Urawa with another 2-1, before Kyoto ended the run with a 1-2 win in Okayama. Eight points behind leaders Kashiwa Reysol on 21, they can ill afford a slip against the division's bottom side.
- The headline subplot is Werik Popó leading Fukuoka's line against his former club. The 24-year-old Brazilian centre-forward, a Copa Sao Paulo top scorer who arrived in Japan at Fagiano Okayama on loan from Red Bull Bragantino, now attacks the defence that knows his 190cm frame best. His duels with 191cm Yugo Tatsuta and 188cm Hiroshi Omori should decide how much of a foothold the hosts get in the final third.
- Both sides line up in a 3-4-2-1, making the wing-back battle the key to territory. Fukuoka field natural right-back Masato Yuzawa, a 2023 Levain Cup winner who turns 33 on the day of kick-off, with Yokohama FC academy product Yota Maejima on the left. Okayama counter with two small, relentless runners in 166cm Kosuke Shirai and 167cm Towa Yamane, the latter having made 30 J1 appearances in 2025.
- Okayama's tempo runs through Oberdan, the 31-year-old Brazilian who was named in the K League best XI in both 2023 and 2024 at Pohang Steelers before joining permanently in 2026 via Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. He calls himself a connector, and his positioning and passing link the lines. Fukuoka answer with Keiya Shiihashi, the former Nagoya, Kashiwa and Sendai holding midfielder known for his bite in challenges, alongside Kanagawa University's Kai Maeda.
- The attacking midfield pairings offer a sharp contrast. Fukuoka use Shu Morooka, signed from Kashima Antlers, and Masato Shigemi, who rebuilt his physique at Fukuoka University and stands out for ball retention and vision. Okayama deploy Na Sang-Ho, a 2018 Asian Games gold medallist with more than 30 South Korea caps, and 23-year-old Kota Kawano, who made his J-League debut at 16 with Renofa Yamaguchi.
- Height dominates the defensive matchup. Okayama's back three features Tatsuta, capped by Japan since his senior debut in 2019, Omori, who jumped two divisions to J1 after J3 spells at Fukushima and Tochigi, and 19-year-old U-20 international Soichiro Mori of JFA Academy Fukushima. Fukuoka respond with 185cm Masaya Tashiro, FC Tokyo loanee Teppei Oka and left-footed Yuma Tsujioka. With Fukuoka on nine goals and Okayama on 11 in eight games, a single set piece could settle it.
- The goalkeeping contrast is striking. Okayama start Lennart Moser, a 196cm left-footed Berliner raised in Union Berlin's academy whose career has taken him through Belgium, Austria and Denmark. Fukuoka counter with 24-year-old Yuma Obata, a Vegalta Sendai academy graduate whose 185cm frame gives him strong close-range shot-stopping, with 191cm local product Takumi Nagaishi waiting on the bench.
- Both benches carry serious experience. Okayama can introduce Ataru Esaka, the 34-year-old former Japan international and J-League Best Eleven winner from his Kashiwa days who strikes with either foot, plus Ryo Takeuchi, 35, who spent 14 seasons at Shimizu and captained them for four straight years, and Masaya Matsumoto with over 140 J1 appearances. Fukuoka hold back Shintaro Nago, who scored five in 36 J1 games for Kashima in 2024, and left-footed former V-Varen Nagasaki captain Hiroki Akino.
