- Tenth-placed Shimizu S-Pulse (4-1-4, 13 points, goal difference -1) host 18th-placed Gamba Osaka (1-3-5, six points, -8), a gap of seven points after nine rounds. Shimizu are level on points with Kawasaki Frontale in eighth and Fagiano Okayama in ninth, and sit eight behind leaders Kashiwa Reysol on 21. Gamba are a single point behind 17th-placed Avispa Fukuoka and one clear of JEF United Chiba.
- The two form lines point in opposite directions. Shimizu have won three in a row: 1-0 at home to Avispa Fukuoka in round seven, 2-1 against JEF United in round eight and a 2-1 win away at Mito Hollyhock in round nine. Gamba have lost four straight — 2-0 at JEF, 0-2 at home to FC Tokyo, 0-1 to Vissel Kobe and 2-0 at Kashima — and have not scored in any of them, while shipping 16 goals across the campaign.
- Gamba right-back Takeru Kishimoto faces a former club. The 29-year-old was on Shimizu's books before moving through Tokushima Vortis, Mito Hollyhock and Cerezo Osaka, and he remains one of the quickest overlapping defenders in the division, delivering accurate right-footed crosses and switching between full-back, wing-back and winger. How Shimizu handle that run from deep down their left is a central question.
- Shimizu's front three is built around Ryo Germain, the left-footed striker who scored 19 goals in 32 games for Jubilo Iwata in 2024, alongside 193cm South Korean centre-forward Oh Se-Hun, 27, signed after spells at Machida Zelvia and Ulsan Hyundai, and 24-year-old wide forward Kenta Inoue, schooled at Yokohama F. Marinos and Oita Trinita. Gamba counter with centre-backs Shinnosuke Nakatani, a Best XI selection in his first season after arriving from Nagoya Grampus, and Shota Fukuoka, who has over 200 J.League appearances.
- In Gamba's 4-2-3-1, 34-year-old Tunisia international Issam Jebali takes the central role behind the striker, bringing the hold-up play and penalty-box instincts that once earned him a Danish Superliga player-of-the-month award at Odense, with Rosenborg and Elfsborg also on his CV. Two-footed Brazilian Welton Felipe, recruited from Levski Sofia, patrols the left, while 164cm sprinter Ryoya Yamashita, formerly of Tokyo Verdy and Yokohama FC, works the right.
- The midfield duel is intriguing. Shimizu line up with 31-year-old Kei Koizumi, a veteran of FC Tokyo, Sagan Tosu, Kashima Antlers, Kashiwa Reysol and Albirex Niigata, next to left-footed holding midfielder Masaki Yumiba, 24, an Oita Trinita academy product who names N'Golo Kanté and Kevin De Bruyne as his models, plus the tactically astute left-footed dribbler Kai Matsuzaki. Gamba's double pivot is Shuto Abe, who spent two seasons with RWD Molenbeek in Belgium's top flight, and 180cm left-footer Rin Mito, 24, out of Kwansei Gakuin University.
- Both goalkeepers share a Fagiano Okayama connection. Shimizu's Togo Umeda, 26, came through the club's own academy and ruptured the ACL in his right knee while on loan at Okayama, returning to post a save percentage above 90. Gamba's Jun Ichimori, 35, built his career through Okayama and Renofa Yamaguchi and organises the back line with sharp anticipation and constant coaching. Shimizu have conceded nine in nine matches; Gamba have conceded 16.
- Shimizu's back line is full of characters. Yuki Honda, 35, stands only 173cm but owns a vertical leap of roughly a metre that makes him a genuine aerial threat, while 172cm Hidehiro Sugai, 27, covers the flank with the kind of relentless motor that invites comparisons with Yuto Nagatomo. Sodai Hasukawa, 28, an FC Tokyo academy graduate who joined permanently after impressing at Ventforet Kofu, marshals the line alongside Brazilian Mateus Brunetti, 26, a former Figueirense, Portuguesa and Dunajska Streda defender.
- There is serious quality in reserve. Gamba can turn to Takashi Usami, 34, the academy prodigy promoted to the first team as a high-school junior who went on to play for Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim and Augsburg; Ryotaro Meshino, the 28-year-old dribbler once signed by Manchester City; and two-footed left-back Ryo Hatsuse, 29, a J1 title winner with Vissel Kobe. Shimizu's options include Brazilian winger Capixaba, 29, signed from Cerezo Osaka, and Kosuke Kinoshita, 32, who scored 11 goals for Kashiwa in 2024.
