Match Preview
- Okayama sit 11th on 13 points from nine matches (4W-1D-4L, 12 scored and 12 conceded for a goal difference of zero), while Kobe are sixth on 19 points (6W-1D-2L, +5). With leaders Sanfrecce Hiroshima already on 23 points from ten games, Kobe can ill afford a slip, and a home win would lift Okayama to 16 points, level with seventh-placed Kawasaki Frontale and eighth-placed Yokohama F. Marinos.
- Okayama arrive in mixed form. They won 2-1 at JEF United Chiba in round five, beat current leaders Hiroshima 3-2 at home in round six and took a 2-1 win at Urawa in round seven for three straight victories, but then lost 2-1 at home to Kyoto Sanga and 2-1 away at Avispa Fukuoka. The capacity to beat top sides is there; so is the habit of dropping points.
- Kobe strung together four consecutive wins from round five: 2-0 at Tokyo Verdy, 3-1 at home to V-varen Nagasaki, 2-1 against Kashima and 1-0 away at Gamba Osaka. That run ended with a 4-2 defeat at third-placed Kashiwa Reysol in round nine, so Kobe travel to Okayama looking to avoid back-to-back losses after scoring 14 goals in nine outings.
- Tactically this is Okayama's 3-4-2-1 against Kobe's 4-3-3, and the key question is whether the two Okayama shadow strikers can find space between Kobe's centre-backs and full-backs. Tasuku Esaka, 34, is a two-footed attacking midfielder and former Japan international who passed through Omiya, Kashiwa and Urawa before returning from Ulsan HD. Alongside him, Na Sang-ho (30) has 30 South Korea caps and likes to cut inside onto his right foot.
- The wing-back areas should be lively. Okayama field two small but relentless runners in 166cm Kosuke Shirai, a 32-year-old right-back who was a regular at Consadole Sapporo, Kyoto Sanga and FC Tokyo, and 167cm Towa Yamane (27), a Hiroshima academy product who made 30 J1 appearances in 2025 after spells at Cerezo Osaka and Yokohama FC. Facing them is 35-year-old Gotoku Sakai, the first Japanese player to captain a Bundesliga club at Hamburger SV.
- Kobe's attack is led by two heavily capped veterans: Yuya Osako (36) and Yoshinori Muto (34). Osako, a master of back-to-goal play who featured for Werder Bremen and FC Koln, scored the winner against Colombia at the 2018 World Cup, while Muto is the first Japanese player to score in all three of Europe's biggest leagues and was named J.League MVP in 2024. Katsuya Nagato, a natural left-back from Yokohama F. Marinos' title-winning side, completes the front line with his left-footed delivery.
- The midfield battle may decide the game. Okayama pair Brazilian Oberdan, a 31-year-old central midfielder who made the K League Best XI in both 2023 and 2024 with Pohang Steelers before joining via Jeonbuk Hyundai in 2026 and describes himself as a 'connector', with ball-winner Eiji Miyamoto (28). Kobe counter with Yosuke Ideguchi (30), the former Celtic man who scored the goal against Australia that sealed Japan's World Cup qualification, and Yuya Kuwasaki (28), a disciplined defensive midfielder signed from V-varen Nagasaki.
- Okayama's defensive anchor is 191cm Yugo Tatsuta, a Shimizu S-Pulse academy graduate who earned a senior Japan cap in 2019 and whose aerial strength will be tested by Osako. Beside him stands 19-year-old Soichiro Mori, a JFA Academy Fukushima graduate and Japan U-20 international, while 196cm German goalkeeper Renato Moser - raised at Union Berlin and with experience at Cercle Brugge and in Austria and Denmark - guards the net with his left foot.
- Kobe have conceded only nine goals in nine matches thanks to a settled back line. Tetsushi Yamakawa, the 186cm Tsukuba University product who took the captaincy in 2025, partners Matheus Thuler (27), a Flamengo youth graduate who came through alongside Vinicius Junior. Behind them, 37-year-old Shuichi Gonda, Japan's goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, organises the line and commands crosses.
- Both benches carry weight. Okayama can call on 35-year-old Ryo Takeuchi, who spent 14 seasons at Shimizu and wore the armband for four straight years, winger Masaya Matsumoto (31) with more than 140 J1 appearances, and creative midfielder Yuta Kamiya (29), a veteran of Shonan, Kashiwa and Shimizu. Kobe counter with sprinter Jean Patric, clocked at 37.8km/h in the Emperor's Cup, 183cm former J3 top scorer Ren Komatsu, and Yuta Goke, a two-time club top scorer and captain at Vegalta Sendai.
