Match Preview
- Eleventh-placed Fagiano Okayama (13 points) host 14th-placed Mito Hollyhock (9) with both sides needing to arrest a slide. Okayama have won four, drawn one and lost five with a goal difference of -3; Mito have won two, drawn three and lost five at -2. Only four points separate them, and with V-Varen Nagasaki also on nine in 15th, the loser risks being dragged firmly into the relegation conversation.
- Okayama have been wildly inconsistent. They stunned league leaders Sanfrecce Hiroshima 3-2 at home in round six and followed it with a 2-1 win away at Urawa, only to then lose 2-1 at home to Kyoto Sanga, 2-1 away at Avispa Fukuoka and 3-0 at home to Vissel Kobe. A W-W-L-L-L sequence captures a team capable of beating anyone yet currently on a three-match losing run.
- Mito arrive on a four-game losing streak, three of which came at home. They were edged 1-0 by Kawasaki Frontale in round seven, beaten 2-1 by Shimizu S-Pulse in round nine and lost 1-0 to Urawa in round ten, with a 2-0 defeat at Yokohama F. Marinos sandwiched in between. Twelve scored and 14 conceded in ten games suggests the defence is holding up; the finishing is not.
- Towa Yamane faces a former club. The 27-year-old left midfielder came through Sanfrecce Hiroshima's academy, joined Cerezo Osaka and then built his career on loans at Thespa Gunma, Mito Hollyhock and Zweigen Kanazawa before establishing himself at Yokohama FC, where he played 30 J1 matches in 2025. At 167cm he relies on close dribbling and a sharp eye for goal.
- Okayama's two attacking midfielders carry serious pedigree. Ataru Esaka, 34, is a former Japan international and two-footed creator who was named in the J.League Best XI during his Kashiwa Reysol days after earlier spells at Omiya Ardija, and he returned to Japan from Ulsan HD in Korea. Alongside him, Na Sang-ho won gold at the 2018 Asian Games, has 30 caps for South Korea and once claimed both MVP and the Golden Boot in K League 2.
- In central midfield Okayama have the edge on paper. Oberdan was named in the K League Best XI in both 2023 and 2024 with Pohang Steelers before arriving via Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, and the Brazilian describes himself as a 'connector' who links defence and attack through positioning. His partner Eiji Miyamoto, 28, is a defensive midfielder who rose through Iwaki FC and Albirex Niigata and joined mid-season, offering huge mileage and quick transitions.
- Mito's response runs through Yu Funabashi. The 24-year-old spent eight years in Kashima Antlers' academy and is both a distributor whose passing accuracy triggers attacks and a reader of the game whose interception numbers stand out. Outnumbered in the middle against Okayama's four, how effectively he can slow Oberdan's progression will largely determine whether Mito can stay in the contest.
- Okayama hold a clear aerial advantage at the back. Yugo Tatsuta, 191cm, is a former Japan international centre-back who came through Shimizu S-Pulse's youth system and made his senior international debut in 2019. Beside him, Haruka Motoyama, a Vissel Kobe academy graduate back on loan, scored in both the semi-final and the final of the 2024 promotion play-offs to send Okayama into J1 for the first time. Mito counter with 183cm Ryo Nemoto and 27-year-old Chihiro Kato up front.
- Both goalkeepers are tall European imports. Okayama's Lennart Moser is a 196cm left-footed 26-year-old who came through 1. FC Union Berlin's academy and has played in Belgium with Eupen and Cercle Brugge as well as in Austria and Denmark. Mito's Jakub Slowik, 35 and 190cm, won his spurs with Slask Wroclaw, Pogon Szczecin and Jagiellonia in Poland and has a long J.League history with FC Tokyo, Vegalta Sendai and Yokohama FC.
- The benches tell different stories. Okayama can turn to 35-year-old Ryo Takeuchi, who spent 14 seasons at Shimizu and wore the captain's armband for four consecutive years, 32-year-old full-back Kosuke Shirai and 19-year-old Soichiro Mori, a Japan U-20 international. Mito counter with Brazilian centre-forward Patricky, a physical 180cm, 90kg presence, and local product Keisuke Tada, born in Hitachi, who topped the Kanto University Division 2 scoring charts with 15 goals at Rissho University.
