Match Preview
- Leaders against 15th place, with 14 points between them. Sanfrecce Hiroshima have scored 25 and conceded only six in 10 matches for a league-best goal difference of +19, though their 23 points are matched exactly by second-placed Machida Zelvia and third-placed FC Tokyo, so the lead rests on goal difference alone. V-varen Nagasaki have won twice, drawn three and lost five, with 11 scored and 18 conceded.
- The momentum could hardly be more different. Hiroshima lost 3-2 at Fagiano Okayama in round 6 but have won four in a row since: 6-1 at home to Cerezo Osaka, 1-0 away at Avispa Fukuoka, 2-0 away at Tokyo Verdy and 3-0 at home to Kyoto Sanga. Nagasaki (L-W-D-D-L) have not won since beating Nagoya Grampus 2-0 in round 7, drawing twice before losing 2-0 at Kashima in round 10.
- This is a mirror match, 3-4-2-1 against 3-4-2-1, which puts the wing-backs directly opposite one another. Nagasaki use 171cm Hijiri Onaga, 31, on the left, a well-schooled operator after spells at Tokyo Verdy, Machida Zelvia and Omiya Ardija. Hiroshima counter with Daiki Suga, 28, whose ferocious left-footed strike earned the nickname 'Suga Cannon', and Naoto Arai, 30, who scored a hat-trick in his first season at the club.
- Sebastien Haller leads the Hiroshima line. The 190cm former Ivory Coast international has played for West Ham, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, and he scored in seven consecutive Champions League matches during his time in Amsterdam. Having fought back from testicular cancer, he now tests a Nagasaki back three built around 186cm Ikki Arai and 184cm Takuma Ominami.
- Behind Haller sit Takuma Asano and Akito Suzuki. Asano, 31, nicknamed 'The Jaguar', has been through Arsenal, Stuttgart, Bochum and Mallorca and still threatens defences with raw acceleration in behind. Suzuki, 23, arrived from Shonan Bellmare as a former high school championship top scorer and thrives on well-timed runs and clean finishing. Nagasaki cannot afford a single lapse in managing the space behind their back line.
- Nagasaki's midfield revolves around 36-year-old Hotaru Yamaguchi. The World Cup veteran spent years in J1 with Cerezo Osaka and Vissel Kobe, played in Germany with Hannover 96, and once topped the league for interceptions thanks to his reading of the game. Ahead of him is Matheus Jesus, 29, the 186cm left-footer who was named J2 MVP in 2025 after a career taking in Gamba Osaka and Corinthians.
- Hiroshima's central pair spans 11 years in age. Yotaro Nakajima, 20, signed the fastest professional contract in club history at 17, is the son of former pro Koji Nakajima, and won the League Cup's New Hero award on the back of his ability to unlock a game with one pass. Hayao Kawabe, 31, brings carrying power honed across four European countries at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Standard Liege and Grasshopper.
- Nagasaki's other inside forward is 35-year-old Takashi Sawada, a club legend who was central to their promotion to J1. His sharp dribbling and knack for drifting into exactly the right pocket of space make him a constant nuisance. Alongside him, Motoki Hasegawa, 27, supplies the final ball he sharpened at Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu. Prising open a defence that has conceded six in 10 demands exactly that kind of invention.
- The goalkeeping contest also merits attention. Hiroshima's Keisuke Osako, 27, came through the club's youth system, is renowned for close-range shot-stopping and was named in the 2024 J.League Best XI. Nagasaki's Masaaki Goto, 32, uses his 190cm frame to dominate crosses and organises the line with authority, having played every league minute in three straight seasons at Montedio Yamagata.
- Both benches carry real quality. Nagasaki can turn to Diego Pituca, 34, who made 169 competitive appearances for Santos and also played for Kashima Antlers, and 187cm Ryogo Yamasaki, 34, who once scored an AFC Champions League hat-trick for Nagoya Grampus. Hiroshima hold back Taishi Matsumoto, 28, a 2019 Copa America squad member, Red Bull Salzburg alumnus Takumu Kawamura, 27, and 18-year-old academy number 10 Shimon Kobayashi.
