Urawa Red Diamonds trace their origins to the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries football club, founded in 1950. A powerhouse of the old Japan Soccer League era, the club became one of the Original 10 members when the J.League launched in 1993. The "Red Diamonds" name derives from the Mitsubishi Group's three-diamond logo.
After struggling in the early J.League years, the Reds surged to prominence in the 2000s, winning their first J1 title in 2006. On the continental stage, they have claimed the AFC Champions League three times (2007, 2017, 2022) -- the most by any club in Asian football history. In 2025, they represented Japan at the FIFA Club World Cup.
The club is currently backed by Diamond F.C. Partners, a joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Motors. Based in Saitama City, the Reds carry the proud footballing heritage of the Urawa district.
Urawa Reds boast the largest supporter base in Japanese football. The sight of the goal-end stands at Saitama Stadium awash in red has become one of the J.League's most iconic images, and the club consistently ranks among the top in average home attendance.
Their passion extends to continental competition, where large contingents of supporters travel to away matches across Asia. The dedication and intensity of the Reds' faithful have earned widespread respect from opponents and media alike. The "We are Reds" chant is synonymous with the unbreakable bond between the club and its fans.
Opened in 2001, Saitama Stadium seats 63,700 spectators, making it the largest football-specific stadium in Japan. Built for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, it is located in Midori Ward, Saitama City, approximately 15 minutes on foot from Urawa-Misono Station.
As a purpose-built football venue, the proximity between the pitch and stands creates an electric atmosphere. The stadium has hosted ACL finals and FIFA Club World Cup matches, cementing its status as one of Japan's most revered football grounds.
