Club History

Yokohama F. Marinos began life as Nissan Motor Football Club in 1972. One of the J.League's Original 10 when professional football launched in 1993, the club -- alongside Kashima Antlers -- holds the distinction of never having been relegated from the top flight throughout J.League history.

With five J1 League titles (1995, 2003, 2004, 2019, 2022) plus Emperor's Cup and League Cup triumphs, the Marinos have won every major domestic honour. The 2019 championship under Ange Postecoglou (now at Tottenham Hotspur) is remembered as one of the most exhilarating title-winning campaigns in J.League history, built on relentless attacking football.

While majority-owned by Nissan, City Football Group (CFG) -- the Abu Dhabi-backed holding company behind Manchester City -- acquired roughly 20% of the club in 2014, making the Marinos part of one of football's most powerful multi-club networks.

The "F" in the Name

The 1999 merger with Yokohama Flugels remains one of the most controversial episodes in Japanese football. The disappearance of Flugels devastated their fanbase; those who refused to accept the merger went on to found Yokohama FC from scratch. The "F" that precedes "Marinos" in the club's official name stands as a permanent tribute to the absorbed club's legacy.

Nissan Stadium

Officially the International Stadium Yokohama, Nissan Stadium is Japan's largest stadium with 72,327 seats. Opened in 1998, it hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup Final where Brazil defeated Germany. Located near Shin-Yokohama Station, it serves as a landmark venue for both football and athletics.

As a multi-purpose facility with an athletics track, the distance between pitch and stands is greater than at football-specific venues -- a long-standing frustration for supporters. The club's ambition to build a dedicated football stadium remains an ongoing conversation with the city of Yokohama.
