Match Preview
- The second match of the Asian final qualifying round. Japan made a flying start with a 7-0 rout of China. The away fixture in Bahrain will be a battle in the harsh conditions of the Middle East, but it is an important game in which Japan want to ride their momentum to a second straight win.
- Bahrain set up in a 4-4-2 with Al-Aswad and Abdljabbar as a front two. In midfield, captain Marhoon takes charge of playmaking, bringing his experience at Al-Hajar to the national team.
- Japan dominate midfield with a double pivot of Wataru Endo and Ko Watanabe, while technicians such as Daichi Kamada, Takumi Minamino and Ritsu Doan line up further forward. Kaoru Mitoma takes on the role of unsettling the opposition defence by cutting in from the flank.
- Bahrain National Stadium can become a brutal environment with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees, so Japan can expect a draining battle of stamina. Hydration and the timing of substitutions will be crucial factors in deciding the result.
- Japan's defence is made up of Shogo Taniguchi, Ko Itakura and Takehiro Tomiyasu, with the European-based contingent's understanding aiming to shut out Bahrain's attack. Tomiyasu in particular has developed as a centre-back at Arsenal and is expected to be a defensive anchor for the national team.
- On the bench are attacking players such as Takefusa Kubo, Junya Ito and Koki Ogawa, who are likely to be introduced at the decisive points of the second half. Kubo especially carries hopes of producing something decisive against a tiring opposition defence.
- Bahrain will look to use home advantage to aim for at least a draw against Japan. In the previous qualifying campaign Japan edged a narrow 1-0 win at home, so this is a chance for Bahrain to gain revenge.
