Match Preview
- This is a season opener for both clubs on matchday one of the 2026-27 La Liga campaign. Atlético closed last season in fourth place on 69 points, with 21 wins, six draws and 11 defeats, scoring 62 and conceding 44. Málaga did not feature in last season's La Liga table at all, so this is a return to the top flight for them. Of the matchday-one games already completed, Alavés and Espanyol sit top on three points with a +3 goal difference.
- Diego Simeone has gone with a 4-4-2 built around 34-year-old Koke, the one-club man who has passed 700 career appearances and still dictates tempo from the centre. Alongside him are two academy-flavoured names: Pablo Barrios, 23, a homegrown ball-winner with Spain honours, and Rodrigo Mendoza, 21, the Spain U-21 signed from Elche. Carlos Martín, 22, a left-footed academy winger who once finished top scorer at Juvenil A level, completes the midfield four.
- Ademola Lookman is the headline act up front. The 26-year-old Nigeria international scored a hat-trick in a UEFA Europa League final with Atalanta, and arrived in Madrid after a long English and German apprenticeship at Charlton, Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester. His combination of one-on-one dribbling and finishing lets him attack from either flank rather than staying pinned to one side.
- Joaquín Muñoz faces his old club. The 27-year-old, who starts in Málaga's midfield, spent time at Atlético before moving on to Huesca and Mirandés and eventually returning to his home city. At 173cm he relies on movement rather than physicality, and whether he can get in behind Atlético's youthful back line at the Metropolitano is one of the more intriguing subplots.
- Atlético's central defensive pairing mixes two very different profiles. Dávid Hancko, 28, is a left-footed Slovakia international who won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord and combines aerial strength with genuine passing range from the back. Robin Le Normand, 29, spent years as Real Sociedad's defensive cornerstone and was part of Spain's EURO 2024-winning squad, bringing sharp anticipation. Their duels with Málaga's 185cm forward Carlos Ruiz, 21, will be worth tracking.
- Málaga's midfield has a distinctly local flavour. David Larrubia, 24, and Dani Lorenzo, 23, both came through with spells at Mérida AD before establishing themselves, and both are slight in build, Larrubia in particular at 172cm and 59kg. Izan Merino, just 20 and listed as a defender at 183cm, is asked to fill the fourth midfield slot. How that lightweight unit copes with Atlético's physical pressing is the central question.
- Carlos Dotor lines up in Málaga's front two despite being a central midfielder by trade. The 25-year-old came through Real Madrid's academy and built up minutes at Celta Vigo and Sporting Gijón before arriving on the coast. Whether the 180cm Dotor drops deep to collect possession, leaving 185cm Carlos Ruiz, 21, as the lone reference point, will shape how Málaga get out of their own half.
- The goalkeeping contrast is a good one. Málaga trust Alfonso Herrero, 32, a Real Madrid academy product who built his career across Oviedo, Burgos, Mirandés and Marbella. At the other end stands Jan Oblak, 33, Slovenia's long-serving number one since arriving from Benfica, whose reaction speed and positioning have made him one of La Liga's benchmark goalkeepers for a decade.
- The benches tell their own story. Atlético can call on Álex Grimaldo, 30, who played a key role in Leverkusen's unbeaten Bundesliga title, Álex Baena, 25, a former La Liga assists leader, Lee Kang-in, 25, the South Korea international developed at Valencia, and Uruguay captain José María Giménez, 31. Málaga's options are Julen Lobete, 25, formerly of Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo, and Juan Cruz, 26, who has played for Real Betis and Leganés.
