Match Preview
- Matchday 2 of La Liga brings a clear structural contrast: Real Betis in a 4-3-3 against Real Sociedad's 4-4-2. Betis pack the middle with three - Marc Roca, Facundo Bernal and Pablo Fornals - while Sociedad hold the centre with just Carlos Soler and Yangel Herrera, pushing Takefusa Kubo and Ander Barrenetxea wide. That numerical imbalance inside means the opening exchanges will hinge on how far Sociedad's wide midfielders tuck in to plug the gaps.
- Takefusa Kubo, starting on the right of Sociedad's midfield four, is the headline act. The 25-year-old moved from FC Tokyo to Real Madrid and served his La Liga apprenticeship on loan at Mallorca, Villarreal and Getafe. His left foot is the weapon: precise dribbling and incisive final balls, plus the ability to hold the ball long enough to draw defenders in before slipping a through pass or cutting inside to shoot. Opposite him is Fran Garcia, the 169cm left-back who also came through Real Madrid's cantera.
- For Diego Llorente, sitting on the Betis bench, this is a reunion with a former club. Raised at Real Madrid Castilla, he passed through Malaga and Rayo Vallecano before establishing himself at Real Sociedad, then took on the Premier League with Leeds United and Serie A with AS Roma. Now 33, the centre-back builds attacks with accurate long passing and remains strong in the air, and could be a late defensive reinforcement against the club where he made his name.
- Antony against Sergio Gomez down Betis's right is the pick of the individual duels. The Brazilian won back-to-back Eredivisie titles with Ajax before a €95m move to Manchester United, and remains a threat cutting in off the flank on his left foot with tricky, unpredictable dribbling. Gomez, 25, came through Barcelona's academy and passed through Borussia Dortmund and Anderlecht before collecting six trophies at Manchester City. He is an attacking full-back with a precise left-footed cross, so his defensive discipline will be tested.
- Sociedad's strike pairing is strikingly young: 21-year-old Orri Oskarsson alongside 23-year-old Luka Sucic. Oskarsson, Iceland's captain despite his age, uses his 186cm frame to hold the ball up and finishes well, having arrived from FC Copenhagen for a club-record €20m. Sucic, a Croatia international schooled at RB Salzburg, offers left-footed precision and playmaking from a forward role. Waiting for them are Natan, the 188cm left-footed Brazilian signed from Napoli, and 35-year-old La Masia graduate Marc Bartra.
- Sociedad's central pair could hardly be more different in profile. Carlos Soler spent years as Valencia's talisman before moving on to Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham, and the Spain international is a fine set-piece deliverer who also scores by arriving late in the box. Yangel Herrera, 28, is the Venezuela international who left Manchester City and made his name at Girona, a box-to-box runner built on physicality and stamina. With only two bodies in the centre, containing 189cm Bernal and the technical Fornals is a tall order.
- Betis carry their real quality in the wide forward positions. Rodrigo Riquelme, 26, came through Atletico Madrid, broke out on loan at Girona and earned a Spain call-up; right-footed, he prefers cutting in from the left and has English experience with Bournemouth. In the middle is Chimy Hernandez, known as 'Cucho', who built his career at Huesca, Mallorca, Getafe and Watford before starring in MLS with Columbus Crew and returning to La Liga with pace and technique.
- Both benches carry serious pedigree. Betis can turn to 34-year-old Isco, a four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, alongside Junior Firpo, the left-back who played for Barcelona and Leeds, and Alvaro Fidalgo, who was the fulcrum of Club America in Mexico. Sociedad counter with captain Mikel Oyarzabal, scorer of the winning goal in the Euro 2024 final, Arsen Zakharyan, the creative midfielder who starred at Dinamo Moscow as a teenager, and Jon Pacheco, the left-footed centre-back who won Olympic gold at Paris 2024.
- The goalkeeping match-up is a strong one. Betis's 190cm Alvaro Valles arrived from Las Palmas as a thoroughly modern keeper: excellent with his feet, comfortable as the first link in the build-up, and reliable at close range at 29. Sociedad's 192cm Alex Remiro was schooled at Athletic Club and came via Huesca and Levante; a Euro 2024 winner with more than 300 senior appearances, he is superb dealing with high balls and lends the back four a settled feel.
- Watch the youngsters, too. Sociedad start 20-year-old Jon Martin at the back, a Spain U19 centre-back who combines aerial strength from his 185cm frame with the passing to build from deep, and who made his senior debut at 19. Betis have their own graduates in reserve: academy goalkeeper Manu Gonzalez, born in 2007, and Pablo Garcia, the left-footed right winger who joined the club's academy at the age of six. Two well-regarded youth systems on show at once.
