Match Preview
- Elche begin matchday two on one point in 10th, having opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw away at Deportivo La Coruna, a goal difference of zero. Sevilla already sit top on six points from two games, so with a match in hand Elche need something at home to keep pace in these opening weeks.
- The shape battle is a 5-4-1 for Elche against Barcelona's 4-2-3-1. Elche pack the box with five defenders and a four-man band of Houary, Aguado, Villar and Morente in front, leaving 191cm target man Fernando Nino alone up top. Getting the ball into the 25-year-old and buying territory will be their only realistic route out of a long spell of pressure.
- Federico Redondo lines up in the middle of that back five despite being a holding midfielder by trade. The 23-year-old son of former Argentina international Fernando Redondo arrived via Argentinos Juniors and Inter Miami, and at 188cm he is valued for his range of vision and passing accuracy, comparisons with Busquets included. How cleanly he can play out of the back may decide whether Elche ever get up the pitch.
- There is a Red Bull Salzburg subplot in the middle of the pitch. Elche centre-back David Affengruber, the 25-year-old Austrian who won league titles with both Salzburg and Sturm Graz, will be marking Karim Adeyemi, the 24-year-old Germany forward who moved from Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund before joining Barcelona. Two players shaped by the same Austrian club, now meeting head-on in the penalty area.
- Lamine Yamal starts on the right, where the 19-year-old's left-footed cut inside is the most dangerous weapon on the field: he debuted for the first team at 15 and broke the youngest-appearance record at EURO 2024. Facing him is German Valera, the left-footed 24-year-old wing-back who came through Atletico Madrid's academy and returned to Elche after spells at Valencia, Zaragoza and Tenerife. Two attack-minded players, one flank.
- On the other side, 19-year-old Buba Sangare takes on Raphinha. Born in Elche, Sangare set Levante's youngest-debutant record at 16 and was signed by AS Roma before returning to Spain, a full-back built on pace and physicality. Raphinha, 29, has worn the captain's armband at Barcelona after coming through Sporting CP and Leeds, and his left foot and set-piece delivery remain the away side's most reliable source of chances.
- Barcelona's double pivot pairs 19-year-old Marc Bernal, a 193cm left-footed holder raised at La Masia from the age of six, with 22-year-old Gavi, the 2022 Golden Boy winner. Both have come back from cruciate ligament injuries, and their profiles complement each other: Bernal's composure and passing against Gavi's ferocity in midfield duels. Finding the vertical pass through Elche's four-man screen is their assignment.
- Elche's midfield is anchored by a homecoming. Gonzalo Villar, 28, came through the club's academy, went on to play Serie A with AS Roma and is back where he started, a player who sets tempo with close control in tight areas. Alongside him is Marc Aguado, the 26-year-old holding midfielder from Zaragoza's youth system whose ball-winning and distribution will be tested by Barcelona's press.
- The goalkeeping contrast is striking. Elche field 39-year-old Argentine Mariano Dituro, the 191cm keeper who won the Zamora Trophy in Segunda in 2024-25 and helped drive the promotion. Barcelona start 25-year-old Joan Garcia, the 193cm Espanyol product who once led the division in saves and won gold at the Paris Olympics, with 36-year-old Wojciech Szczesny waiting on the bench.
- Both benches carry serious weight. Barcelona hold back Pedri, EURO 2024 top scorer Dani Olmo, Europa League winner Jules Kounde and 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi. Elche can call on Argentina international Facundo Buonanotte, who has played for Brighton, Chelsea and Leicester, Grady Diangana with more than 200 appearances for West Bromwich Albion, and Ezequiel Ponce, who arrived in Spain in August 2026. The substitutions could reshape the closing stages.
